Has anyone had any problems/expirience transporting knives in checked airline luggage since the NY disaster? The FAA say no problem, but is this the case?

I've had no problems at all. I've flown from San Francisco to London via Dallas and encountered no problems although I had three folders, a Leatherman Wave and a SAK in my checked lugagge. Even in the first days after the attack flying from Toronto to Dallas I had no problems although my checked luggage was hand searched. I had been grounded in Toronto on the 11th. But don't put anything sharp into your carry on. Not even nail clippers, that will get you in in trouble.

Hi dcv69,

I have flown several times since 9/11, each time with sharp objects in my checked baggage. No problems whatsoever.

I spent the week of the terrorism deep in the Grand Canyon. When we got out on the Sunday afterwards we heard all sorts of different warnings about traveling with knives. I collected them from our backpacking group (2- fixed blades 6"+, 8 - folders 2" - 4"+, 6 jacknives, 4 - leathermen, 6 pair of scissors, and a few clippers) and was prepared to mail them home. However, I checked with the airline personnel and they said no problem if checked in my baggage. Still a little unsure, when I got to the counter I explained that I had about 30 knives and other sharp instruments from a group backpacking trip. He said no problem and told me to go and place my lock on the duffle bag. We flew into Logan A/P in Boston with no problems. I have since flown and have declared that I have a knife in my baggage and they all say, thanks and fine.
PS: I don't take it out of my baggage until I'm out of the A/P... just in case someone got the wrong idea.
