Transporting knives via airplane

Probably a dumb question, but I've never done it. I'm going to Florida in July to vacation and I want to bring a blade with me cause I just feel naked without a knife in my pocket.

Would I keep it in a bag and notify the tsa guys operating the x rays?

If I have a knife in my carry on I'm assuming that would not be okay to bring on the plane, what about if it's under the deck? I would feel nervous of it possibly getting stolen though unless it was in my carry on. So what does everyone know about knives and planes?? I don't know what to expect, and help would be appreciated.

Absolutely do not take it on your person or your carry-on unless you feel like giving it away to the TSA.

Place it in your checked luggage but even then you risk it mysteriously disappearing from your bag. Stick with a SAK, Leatherman, or any piece you are not overly attached to IMO. If you want to carry one of your favorites or something valuable, plan ahead and ship it to wherever you are staying. This may be worth it for a longer vacation. Otherwise, just settle for something like I mentioned in your checked luggage.

Enjoy your trip.

I think you are not alowed to bring any knives in the passengers cabin of an airplain, but it would be just fine to have them in the luggage you check in.

I flew a few years ago from Florida to New York (then back) and had a knife in my checked luggage, no problem. Carry on is not a good idea.

If you're extremely worried about it just pick up when you get in and then mail it home when you leave.

You could not bring one on the plane and stop by a wal mart and pick up a Kershaw when you get to Florida. Either mail it home or gift it away before you head back.

Thanks guys, thats what I expected. I wanted to bring my Strider DB but I was worried about it "mysteriously vanishing" if I at least didnt have it on carry on which I figured would not be allowed. I dont think I want to take the risk of that happening and I'm only gonna be there for a week so I dont want to ship it either.

Many makers and sellers travel by air with their knives across the country.
Just put it in your checked luggage and have pictures and a written inventory.
I don't think you will have any problems with a folder. No need to say anything about it.

Pack a replaceable/inexpensive knife in your check-in. You might be able to sneak one in your carry-on, but I wouldn't advise or risk it.

If I feel the need to have a knife on me during a long trip I will reach out to the Hotel I will be staying at proactively and mail the blade to myself c/o the hotel. Insured w/signature reciept, that way I have record of who accepted the package. for short trips i will just buy a cheapo to use.

Never check anything you can't afford to lose. The best way to travel is with just a carry on rolling suitcase. Having a specific knife is usually not worth the hassle of a checked bag.

The question is not dumb, and the solution is simple. Just turn your knife into a kit. Thieves are lazy and are not looking for a project. Take your knife apart. put the small pieces in a sandwich along with the tools and the handle. Put the blade in your checked bag and carry the rest on.View attachment 439508View attachment 439509

I thought the TSA loosened up their regs a few months back and were now allowing small blades in the carry-ons?

****Nevermind, I see where they reversed that decision.

I should add that you can put a small cable through the pivot hole of your blade and padlock it to the frame of the suitcase.

The flight attentdants raised holy hell, and the bill to loosen the restrictions was defeated (or tabled).

I carried a Leatherman squirting on my carry on back in February with no problem.

I really like this idea - pretty much anyone looking in your bag is going to see just the blade and pass on it. If the blade has a thumbhole you could even secure it to the frame of the suitcase. This could work nicely if you really need to have a nicer, more valuable knife during your trip
