Trap making ( pic heavy)

This afternoon i decided i was going to practice building a trap or two and i decided on building a spring spear trap.

I used some rattan, nylon string, the HEST and some pine i had laying around in the firewood pile.

Here is the start..this all took place in my backyard ( lol ) so pardon the urban environment..I lashed the piece of rattan i was useing as the engine for the trap to the apple tree in my yard, then pounded a stake into the ground to hold the trigger assembly in place. I carved the trigger mechanism out of pine, but the little trigger ring hat holds all of the tension was made out of a green willow stick and willow bark.

Here is a picture of the tension ring i made.

The trap was quite powerful, as usual. It was very important that the trigger relaease ring was set VERY close to the edge of the two trigger sticks or the trap takes to much force to set off..you can also fine tune it by taking up slack in the toggle/trip wire. I reccomend that you practice setting the trap a few times before lashing the spear on as an accident could warrant a trip to the hospital.
anyhow, i hope you all enjoy the pics!

Nice work. Thanks for sharing, now i finaly have an idea of how those traps are put together. I would like to try to make one but i'd definitely get some weird faces and questions. Most people here dont see the use in survival skills since "you dont need anyway".
The HEST addition is a pretty neat idea

Great post! The pics really illustrate the engine design.

One note - be sure to anchor the working end of the trap, or your quarry may run off for kilometers with your HEST sticking out of it in the event that it's not an immediate kill. :-)

Very cool...but what the hell kinda of knot is that?? The DPx HEST was designed to have four lashing points!

A couple of things to think about.

The HEST is strong enough to be lashed just at the back two holes and pry bar putting a few more inches of penetration into your target

You can put a small sharp stick or arrowhead in the handle hole to create a barb (We are talking pig here) almost like a harpoon when the animal pulls away it releases and catches. You can also strike with the blade and wrap bone or stick barbs at the bottle opener/wire cutter.

Think of what TWO HESTs can do when spring loaded downward to meet int he middle along bait or game trail (pigs for example) but you did a great job with one.

Also think about upward striking traps that hit softer, deadlier parts of the animal when triggered by stepping or tripping.

Cool pics, thanks. I really like that the HEST can be used that way, but I'll make every effort to use a sharpened stick instead.

Great spear trap man ! I'm impressed ! Maybe you could try a smaller version sometime, utilizing the AH-1.( when Jay gets them in !!) I'm thinking , same rig, just bore holes in the side of the spring bar, and load her up with AH-1's:eek:

Wish I was helping you on that today, instead of working.:p

Hiwa, i have a source that carries AH1's IN edmonton... Message me and i will let you know who it is. AND!!! You can help me on the next day. we will arrange a meet!

And RYP, thats a super ultra Gaurdian_A1 knot that i used on the HEST. LOL. I hear you on the multiple lashing points and all the ways to make a deadly knife even deadlier. Thanks for viewing my post!
