If trapping isnt your thing move on to another thread Thanks:D
Its been so long since I started a post people will be saying where ya been
If any remember me lol
Finally have some time, downloaded some pictures from the last few months and a few from a couple days ago.Need to post some pictures and stories to catch up
Come winter and Im a trapper, been at it for a number of years.Sometimes a challenge to balance work and setting/checking traps
Im mostly a marten trapper, that is the animal I target and the most plentiful on my trapping area. They get marketed as Sable in the fur trade
Things have been going quite well this season with a fair number of marten caught.
That is until friday

Should name this thread trouble with Wolverines
Heading out with the snow machine it wasnt running right after only 2.5 kms
Around 1 km I ran into fresh wolverine tracks
Like tales of old they can play havoc on a trapline. In only the short distance that I had travelled They and yes more than one busted apart my trapsets and ate 4 marten.
Heres a fresh wolverine track next to a fingerless glove
Looks to be a small male

The carnage a marten ate to the head in a 120 conibear
WosleyCreek011.jpg

As Im only trapping a short distance this year The next day headed out with snoshoes, pack and faithful pack dog to go check the rest of my line.
Ive had these problems before
Heres a track of one on the move.the classical wolverine track with a rabbit along side and over to the right
WosleyCreek005.jpg

I encountered 3 separate sets of tracks.I suspect all males as this time of year they will travel one or 2 with a larger male, somewhat like mountain sheep or deer that will travel in male groups
Heres a fairly beat down trail that they have all traveled
WosleyCreek009.jpg

First couple sets hadnt been disturbed by them yet I had trapped 2 marten
WosleyCreek002.jpg

They had proceeded to check and wreck the rest of every set they encountered

The weather on the snowshoe walk was -12 at the truck
Dog carried the bait extra traps and othe trapping gear
She likes it or hasnt said anything when I saddle her up anyways.
WosleyCreek001.jpg

At around 4 kms in we ran into some moose tracks. From the tracks, beds and pis stain patterns in the snow I figure a younger bull
WosleyCreek012.jpg

Rewarded later with antler sign where he had been busting up a willow with his headgear
WosleyCreek014.jpg

Moose will realy bust up a trail snowshoe or otherwise while walking along Im reminded of that as the walking gets tough.
Later on he drops down behind us and messes up the trail out as he is also heading down hill
All the tracks of all that live out there where on the snow to read
I saw otter mink marten weasel wolverine coyote squirrel mouse vole mule deer elk and moose
A marten on the hunt you can see where he headed under the snow then popped out downhill a bit

That's really cool stuff. Do you trap the wolverines to stop them, or is there some other method?

Gorgeous dog too.

No other method other than leaving. And that just carries into the next year
Over the years Ive caught some.
Likely this guy that the trail camera took pictures of last year
he was a problem then should of done something

Hi dboles -

Awesome post! Very interesting.

I have to say that Revelstoke was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been - just a stunning setting there.

Thanks for the pictures and story - beautiful pup too!

best regards -

Nice work and thanks for sharing. Do you use all Conibears or do you use snares at all? I have almost all of my trapping supplies before I head out. I am going to pick up a 220 tomorrow for beaver.

Great stuff buddy, Wolverines have always been my favourite animal, they are fearless and will stand their ground against a bear. Their stamina is legendary and can scale mountains in hours that would take men days to scale and require pack loads of gear !

I guess in your line of work you aren't so impressed by the little bundles of teeth and claws eh !:D

Dan, great pics! Those snow-cover mountains are really pretty. I've never gone trapping, but it seems to make you extra aware of your surroundings, checking for sign, etc. Thanks for posting!

Awesome pics, I have run traplines before for beaver, muskrat, raccoon etc. Havent done it in a while as there isnt much money in those anymore. I learned from my dad when I was younger. Nice to see people can still make some cash doing it:thumbup:

Thumbs up to you! I would have liked to get in to that when I retire this coming year but being in Mass. the laws are way too restrictive to make it worthwhile. We have some pretty big pine-fishers here. I've called in a few while deer hunting, using a predator call. Illegal to shoot them though, just fun calling them in.

Dboles,

What a great thread/pictures. I love seeing someone who is still running a trap line. What kind of knife where you using, again? I'm not familiar with the initials DP? Do you have a link to a website, maybe? The knife is really awesome looking and might be just what I've been looking for.

Thanks,

Kristopher
