I was browsing Shrade knives, and I noticed a trapper that had one blade, and it was a lockback. All the other ones I've seen have a clip and spey blades. What makes a knife a trapper?

You would think that this would be an easy question to answer however it poses several problems I am attaching Levines definition which addresses a trapper as a 2 bladed knife. with an elongated clip blade and a spay blade on a serpentine frame. He also explains the mini trapper and muskrat style ( which employs 2 of these blades). Over the years I have heard the mini's called doglegs and peanuts as well. but the real problem comes in when you address the same larger knife with only the clip blade technically I believe it is considered a folding hunter or serpentine hunter but it has also come to be called a trapper. I have included some pictures of several of these trapper styles most made by Schrade but they should show what I mean. One picture has on the left a yellow trapper under the LL Bean tang. above that a John Wayne commerative made by Queen cut. Next is a Schrade with jigged delrin handles muskrat. The other side has a schrade Walden with jigged delrin handles above that is a Schrade Walden with real bone jigged handles and above that a Parker Frost with real bone handles made on contract for Parker Frost when they were in business together for a few years. The other picture has a few of the ones that are harder to name. Bottom right is a Napanoch (before Winchester bought the company)( folding hunter, serpentine, dogleg ) what ever in bone Then we have the same parker frost style in one blade lockback then an old timer also with a brass liner lock. The other side has a Honk falls ebony ( another company which was near Schrade.) This one has a spear blade so may be this one is considered a dogleg jack. the next little one is a Schrade Walden in bone the last is a Schrade that was sold as a dogleg jack pattern. While the one bladed lock backs were sold as trappers. Oh well enjoy the pictures Rich

Thanks for the explanation. Love the pics. It's nice to talk about something other than "tactical" folders. Not that I have anything against them.
