Have any of you used extra large rat traps to catch squirrel/rabbits?
Was it successful?
Was it a total failure?
Did you bait them?
I'm wondering because I don't have a lot of snare or dead fall building experience and it's not a skill I want to have to learn on the fly.
But I figured on my next one or two week trip I would try some large rat traps near where squirrels are hanging out and see if it does the trick.
Thanks- Andrew

There was a thread on here about using them for survival trapping. They were modded by putting a screw/screws through them from the bottom that protruded through to better hold whatever you caught. IIRC they also put a hole in them for some kind of anchor line. --KV

find a very active squirrel tree and lean cleaned up branch on it at an angle they will travel that path cause it is easier. put an anchored rat trap on it. you will catch them. as to the screws bit i would look the legality of that up first. if i remember right there was some questioning on there legality in a non survival situation. but they work, i have two of them in my bug out bag and i know how to make snares. there just an easy fall back if not eating becomes not an option.

They'll catch squirells easily. Won't work well with rabbit sized critters though.

Trapping in general is a whole slew of new skills you will HAVE to learn if you are going to have any success at all.

I've been doing it for these two years.
Rat trap works fine as far as I know.
