Recieved a call from a friend who owns a tourist property.
They have been experiencing some damage due to beaver activity,he asked me if I could remove them for him.
A small river runs through the middle of the property

I managed to set 3 traps the 1st visit out

After the sets had been made I told the owner not to expect much for the first few days as it has been cold.Cold weather will keep them in the lodge.I had also made lots of noise with my activities, this will also keep them in for a bit also.
I told him to expect some movement if it warms or we get a storm front move in.
Last night we had a huge wind and snow. The falling barometer must have made the beavers active.
A phone call from the owner told me one of my sets had connected

A large male beaver I think may weigh over 40lbs

very cool to see those traps, haven't seen those since i was a brat and my elderly neighbour trapped beaver in his ponds.

that firehall still active or did they make it a museum?

Thanks for the write up and the nice pics.

Can you enlighten me on how those traps work?

I mean they obviously trap and drown them but...I'm not seeing how.

thanks!

edit to add...or does it break them like a mouse trap...confused...

Neat stuff. How's beaver taste? I've heard it's fairly fatty, but if cooked right, is pretty good.

The traps are international certified for humane killing. They meet all ISO Trap Standards. This trapl is called Connibear this model is the 330 a very powerful trap.Basically it has a metal frame that pivots, powered by the 2 compressed springs that you see on the sides. An Animal,in this case a beaver on passing through trips a trigger which unleashes the spring. They hit the animal hard enough to kill it there is no drowning involved.Hope this explains
Bush-The firehall contains antique fire trucks and gear all operational. It was likely built after your visit to 3Valley
6Shooter beaver is fine food it has to be cooked right,it has the moist texture of say a turkey thigh. Its not oily at all

thats around the size we'd get at my parents farm. although I preferred shooting to trapping, there were a few that would shrug off a .22 so they more often got fed 30-30. And I only shot them while out of the water. (or maybe just the out of water bits..) One of my great uncles used to swear that beaver meat was the best a man could eat, and the fat inside of the tail was fantastic. he had trapped them for food as a boy.

Wow, 330's! I only have a couple of connibear 220's and recently shot a 50 pound beaver. I'm starting to get a few issues with mine...they're trying to clog the lake's drain pipes I was thinking about setting the 220's (may not be big enough) at the drain pipes and hopefully that'll kill'em or keep'em away. I don't mind having a few around, but they do have to be "managed". If you don't mind me asking, what did you use for an anchor?

How do you know that was the only one? Or is that just the first one you trapped?

I think beavers are cool but like skunks, possums, porcipines ect. can do a lot of damage to property. I hate when I'm fishing and one surfaces right next to my kayak, gives me a heart attack everytime!

a pair of beavers systematically destroyed my neighbours farm where i grew up. They dammed his creek in 3 spots, destroyed all his trees, and flooded all seven of his fields, destroying all his crops. His cattle fields and 3 barns got flooded out (3 feet deep) and he had to temporarly house his cattle at a neighbours farm.

he dynamited all 3 dams, plowed his fields under and started over the next year.

By spring the dams were back, the field were hockey rinks (much to our delight) and he was pissed off. sat out there for a week with his rifle and put lead thru both the beavers.

Remmm its the 1st one I trapped
Typically beaver will have 3 generations in a lodge or den.
These are bank beaver just like regular ones except that they live in faster moving water and any lodges, dams they build get washed away.So they dig burrows and tunnels to live in
Today I went out and caught another. This looked like the female. So hopefully the property problems are over.We will see

Knife for today is a DP Camper (I believe thats the model)
