My brothers place is over run with squirrels we plan on setting some old school homeade traps around. pobably trigger snares and small fig. 4 deadfalls and than lighting up the old hibachi (doesn't that sound like a day to remember) I know alot of diff types of snare mechs but the only other kind of trap I know how to make is a fig.4 anyone got any other ideas

I've used Have-A-Heart traps to trap squirrels at my mother's house and then relocate them to a state park (it's illegal to relocate, I know)...also caught a skunk and a house cat ;)...anyway, she didn't want to see me popping a squirrel in a cage in her front yard.

These traps are expensive compared to homemade traps, but maybe you know somebody who can loan you one or two. They do work. Little peanut butter sandwiches are the best bait. Good luck :)

Where I live, our animal control (dog pound) people will loan cage traps to you for 10 days for a returnable deposite of $10.00 . they have all sizes of traps. you might check with your animal control & see if they will do the same!

A good trap for squirrels is to lean a good sized branch against a tree and set snares along the length of the branch. Squirrels are always looking for short cuts and will run up the branch almost every time.

Squirrels are naturally tough animals, both in texture and temperament, especially a big, old boar squirrel, when you kill one of these you won't have any trouble identifying it. :D

My point is this, while squirrels are very good and I eat them often you might want to rethink the hibachi, unless rawhide dog treats are what you are going for. Chris

I'll second that! If you want to grill 'em, put the meat in a crock pot before work and top them off with beer (and a little tabasco). Turn it on low and when you get home, they'll be ready to grill, flavorful, and much more tender than if you'd skun-em-n-burned-em.

Personally, I prefer stewed, slow roasted squirrel.

Oh, crap...

Squirrels are pretty easy to trap with a box trap. Bait it and you'll do fine. Rubbermaid tub works real well........ afterwards.

Towards this end, do a search for a post by Pict entitled the Arapuca bird trap. We've used this on squirrels and it works excellently. Basically a box trap with an excellent trigger.

To keep the squirrel population down around my camp (they get inside, chew wires, destroy things, etc.), I use Rat traps baited w/Jiff P-butter. Works every time...
