Im going to be doing a minimalist backpacking trip for an extended period of time and i need a sleeping bag that is versatile enough for me to sleep on top of during the summer in Germany, and inside of, during the winter in Italy. ill probably be carrying either a maxpedition vulture 2 as a carry on and a maxpedition doppel duffel as a check in/shoulder bag. Barring those two i would carry a single osprey waypoint (wich is my second choice because A: its quite large and imossible to fit into a locker or take into any buildings anywhere, and B: its nowhere near as durable as those two bags previously mentioned.

so any suggestions for a good sleeping bag?

if you don't mind spending the coin, down is the way to go, lighter and more compact than synthetics. REI would be the place to look. Are you tenting or hosteling? Another idea to look at, silk sleeping bag liners are the bees knees for comfort, and are great for keeping your sleeping bag clean, and keeping from having to wash it on the road, and are great for places where the sanitation of the bedding is suspect.

JacksRBetter makes under hammock quilts in 2 lengths and 3 thicknesses. They make great down blankets. The thinnest one weighs 1lb. and squunches up into a melon sized ball.

I have an REI travel bag that is super affordable ($120) 800 fill down rated for 45* that I love. Weighs only 1 lb 3 oz, I have used it down to 45 degrees without noticing. They sell a ton of good gear but the stuff with the REI logo on it is just as quality for a much better price. I don't know about European backpacking so if you can determine if the weather is going to cooperate then a 45 degree bag is perfect for warmer weather.

If you think that you will be experiencing anything around 30 degrees or less. If you are counting ounces you cannot beat Western Mountaineering. You get what you pay for IMO and my WM Ultralite was $400 well spent. Good luck to you.
