Making a two week trip to Atlanta. I know someone had a page here that showed each state's knife laws. I'd like to find out restrictions (or if anyone knows off the top of their head, that'd work too).

Also, any good knife stores I should look at? I'll be in Atlanta and a town called Alfaretta.

Thanks,

Mike

Its Alpharetta. :)

Atlanta does not have the greatest knife stores. However, you can check out Brigade Quartermaster HQ and Atlanta Cutlery. I don't know much about the carry laws, but after living there for 25 years, its not the kind of place where you would get hassled and searched for having a knife clipped inside your pocket.

Thanks guys.

I haven't heard much good about the place. I'm going on military orders, not really looking forward to it.

After looking at the sites, it looks like it'll be a mini-grip with me for the trip.

Thanks again.

There is actually an Atlanta city law that is stricter than the rest of GA. I believe its no locking blades over 3". However, I have lived in GA my whole life and went to school in Atlanta. I have never had or heard of a problem carrying any kind of knife, even on campus where there was a 2" blade limit.

I agree, but brigade quartermaster closed the retail store:grumpy:

A lot of it is left to the Officer's discretion.

I just learned that carrying a fixed blade concealed is a no-go.

Basically your safest bet is a folder with around a 3" blade.

Knife stores are lacking since Brigade Quartermaster closed their storefront & went to catalog only. Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna has some knives, but they are mostly a gun/hunting store.

Your best bet is a side trip to Franklin's Gun Shop in Athens. They have a good selection of several brands, including Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel, Buck, Boker, and Kershaw.

There are also a few cop shops on the south side that carry some blades, but not a lot of high end stuff. Tactical Gear & Suply (or something like that) comes to mind in Forest Park. You can get their actual name and web site from Benchmade's dealer list.

I never get tired of saying this, but GA law has that language banning concealed carry of "knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense". I lived in Atlanta for many years and never heard of anybody charged for this, but I guess if you're already in trouble they can tack this on for your pocketing a tactical looking or sounding knife.

Skip Franklins. Head to Shuler's in Commerce. Much better selection of knives, including customs. Randalls, Chris Reeve(I grabbed an Umnumzaan on sale for well under $300.) Great Benchmade, Case and Kershaw selection. Franklins has an OK selection of some lower end knives, but Shulers has a much better selection of everything and the guy behind the knife counter actually knows knives, not like the college kids working at Franklins. If you feel like driving an hour from Atlanta check them out. If you are a gun person too one of the best "tactical" gun stores in the country is in Athens though, which would put you closer to Franklins. PM me for more details if you want.

Downside is you can't ogle UGA girls in Commerce.

army navy surplus near marietta has a lot of benchmade and ontario blades. shuler's is in gainesville and commerce but i didn't think they had much of a selection. franklin's has quite a selection but they always charge MSRP for all their knives. besides that it's chain stores such as bass pro. try to see the ga aquarium while you are here. i think its somewhere everyone should go when coming to atlanta. other places are coca-cola, the varsity and downtown athens.

since you will be in alpharetta you will have plenty of restaurants and shops available. My favorite is La Parilla mexican restaurant off exit 11. great food and good service.

Varsity? Talk about old greasy food, and not exactly the good type. Never took a liking to them, there's a very good reason they didn't take off like Chick-fil-a (also from Atlanta).

Ahh yes it is super super greasy. That's why I refrain from order most of their food but I love their frosted orange. Still, everyone should have a chili dawg w/mustard.

I believe that the Shulers in Commerce has a knife section run by a private individual, not just the store. I think I remember him saying that to me while I was in there one time. I did not like the one in Gainesville at all. The exact same gun between the two stores would be 10% higher in Gainesville. Any outdoor store that has Randalls, Chris Reeves and some custom knives is a pretty good selection to me. I will stand by Shulers in Commerce as my pick.

Now as far as the UGA girls go, gotta head to Athens for that. Still a little too cold for them to be out running around though.
