I'm going on a Caribbean cruise with my family next month (don't start). I know I can check a knife in my luggage on the plane. Anybody know what cruise ship (Carnival, specifically) policies are regarding bringing knives onto boats? Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

They XRAY everything. Princess called me down to sign in for my Spyderco POLICE - gave it back at the end of the cruise. :foot: HOWEVER, my Leatherman Super TOOL was released to me there and I was allowed to have it for the cruise. :D Note that I them both in the top zipper of the main check on big luggage.

You can't take 'em ashore anyway. They confiscated my scuba knife in the Caribbean last year too. NO POINT! Like a big screwdriver. Gave it back at the final night before leaving.

Most of these foreign countries have crazy KNIFE laws, however. :thumbdn:

I leave in a month on Princess again; for another cruise.
Be careful - but they do give it back when you leave - don't carry ashore - they do have the things we used in COURT - Xray hooded airport booths - when getting back on.:p

Last Spring the wife & I took a seven day cruse on Royal Carib., I didn't take any knives just to be on the safe side. Next year I will take a Cricket & a Spin in my luggage, they have dogs that sniff for bombs and booze on the dock where you leave your luggage, then it is delivered to your cabin. same drill in reverse when you depart. DO NOT carry knies on and off the Ship, that includes Ports visited, because you have to walk thru metal dectors. Before you leave at the end of the cruise return every thing to your luggage. Enjoy your cruise....

Carnivals website says the following:
f) Weapons, firearms, ammunitions, explosives, incendiary devices, or other dangerous goods are strictly prohibited aboard the vessel. The Guest warrants that no such articles are contained in any receptacle or container carried or presented by him as baggage. Carnival may deny boarding to any Guest traveling with any weapons, firearms, ammunitions, explosives, incendiary devices, or other dangerous goods and no refund of the cruise fare will be issued. Carnival will confiscate and turn over to the appropriate governmental authorities any of the above articles found on the Guest or his baggage. The Guest will be solely responsible for any and all damage and/or loss caused by his violation of this policy.

Nothing explicit about knives. Perhaps you could get something inconspicuous like a SAK, or leatherman or something small like a Ladybug by security. I would check with them rather than risk losing a knife.

I went on a Princess cruise a few months ago. Listen to the previous posts Everything is sent through a scanner or metal detector. Getting off a ship and getting on. I am glad I didn't take anything of mine even though they probably would have let me have it back at the end of the voyage.

my gf and I went on our first cruise with Carnival a few months ago. Carried everything on, didn't check any of it. The exrayed and said nothing about my spyderco cricket, Benchmade D2 Griptilian, and the 1.5L bottle of Grey Goose, even though their booze policy was for one bottle of wine per person which we also had.

Buy a straight razor, for shaving, put it in your shaving kit. Get on the ship, eat like a king, enjoy the islands, get off at port, go home, wonder why you bothered. ;)

Gail and I had no problem carrying small knives (under 3" blades) while visiting each island. About 2 years ago. They were X-ray'd, but not confiscated. (Princess Cruise - Caribbean)
