Travelling to Chicago

I think the blade length is under 3 inches, no?

If so, the knife is pefectly legal to carry. If a little over 3 inches, it's no problem in practice--CPD is only interested in idiots with knives, not decent folk such as yourself.

In all reality, SAKs are welcome everywhere in Chicago. However, you should be aware that metal detectors exist around many high profile locations: Daley Center, Willis Tower, Hancock Building, etc. In such cases, whether or not you can bring your blade into the building is at the security guard's discretion and therefore unpredictable. Knives unrelated to specific work are prohibited in schools.

Your biggest problem in Chicago will of course be dealing with the monstrous portions of food.

Here's the relevant part of Chicago's Municipal Code:

(f) No person shall carry concealed on or about his person a or dagger, dirk, stiletto, bowie knife, commando knife, any blade of which is released by a spring mechanism, including knives known as “switch- blades” or any other type or kind of knife, any blade of which is more than two and one-half inches in length, ordinary razor or other dangerous weapon except that no person 18 years of age or under shall carry concealed on or about his person, any knife, the blade of which is two inches in length or longer. Provided, however, that this provision shall not apply to the following officers while engaged in the discharge of their official duties: sheriffs, peace officers, and corrections officers; nor to the following employees or agents while engaged in the discharge of the duties of their employment: conductors, baggagemen, messengers, drivers, watchmen, special agents and policemen employed by railroads or express companies; nor to persons lawfully summoned by an officer to assist in making arrests or preserving the peace, while so engaged in assisting such officer.

I added bold to the part that concerns me. Not sure where Watchful is getting 3 inches from. That being said, it's still a SAK, about the most NKP-friendly knife-related tool you can find. I can't imagine you getting hassled for carrying it as long as you don't give the police any reason to stop you. Though as Watchful said, any government building or landmark will have its own security that may not want you to have it. If you'll be visiting one of those places, it's safer to leave it in the car or wherever you're staying (hotel/family/etc).

Hi Finedges -

As posted above, the limit in Chicago is 2.5 inches.

However, I carry my Vic Waiter there and have never had a problem.

I always take my SOG Flash (the smaller one) with me as well.

As stated above, the Chicago police have a lot more to do that hassle folks about a pocket knife, you'll be just fine.

best regards -

Thanks everyone. I feel alot better now. I haven't been to Chicago since I was a kid, and with some manf. producing knives just for Chicago, I was getting nervous. An alox SAK of one form or another is ALWAYS on my person, and I didn't want to feel "naked", especially since I'll be driving there. Thanks again folks.

Well, please enjoy your stay.

I apologize in advance for the weather--it's that two week period in January where it gets really cold here.
