I know this isn't the most terribly exciting topic, but I need one for my Archaeology trip this summer. Any ideas?

Usually better results are obtained by posting non-knife topics in our Community Forum.

However, since most knives are made of metal, go to this website, which is the metallurgy mother board: http://www.mlc.lib.mi.us/~stewarca/metallurgy.html

Scroll down and find several sources for archeological metallurgy. Walt

This summer, Metaponto, Italy. I'm going to survey and maybe excavate a Greek colony. Metaponto is located on the coast in Basilica. It is between the heel and the toe of the Italian "boot" - I guess where the arch would be. It is supposed to be a blast. Last summer I did commercial Paleontology in Vernal, Utah and Dinosaur, Colorado. I wish I had some pics scanned in so y'all could see.

Can't help with trawl, trowl or trowel.

Hope you enjoy Italy. Sounds like a lot of work, but fun too. Nice way to spend summer.

Vernal is desolate, but beautiful. Spent 10 years in Utah and saw most of it.

Have you tried the Hardware Store? I bet Martha Stewart could help with the ultimate TROWEL, but I don't think she's a Member here.

Hey racerx,
I have done some archaeology. Before I took my two month field school our instructor told us that the only trowel worth it's salt is a Marshall Town. So I bought a Marshall Town. Sure enough, all the people that had bought some other kind broke theirs before the course is up. All of our instructors carried Marshall Towns, as did all of the visiting archaeologists that came through to drop a little knowledge on us, or perhaps just to laugh.

I can't remember the size that mine is, and it's in the garage. Make sure you sharpen it well. One of my instructors had his original Marshall Town that had been sharpened down to about the size of a palette knife. He used that for doing details. If you are doing survey you will probably get a lot more familiar with a shovel than any trowel though. Unless you are lucky enough to find something nice. Have a good time though, I'm envious.

Them:"What's that clipped to your pocket, a beeper?"
Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

Have you thought of a Custom made? Talonite maybe, mamouth iroy handle, you'll be the man at the digs?

Yeah, I've looked around, it seems the Marshalltown is the standard. Thanks for the info, and spelling tips. Where did you do Archaeology? Was it just for fun or did you have some professional interest?

A trowel or small shovel goes into field gear right after the knife, and probably ahead of the big bowie knife. There's even a commandment in the Bible to that effect:

12 Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself.
13 As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement.
14 For the LORD your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.
