Treadmill motor for knife grinder?

I have a 1 HP DC variable speed treadmill motor. I was wondering if anyone had built a grinder using one. And if they did, how it turned out.

I started with a one hoarse but switched to a two horse only because I wanted the one hoarse one on my metal cutting band saw...Yes they work fine,just don't dog on them to hard or they over heat to much.

I'm trying to set a grindstone up with a 1/2 HP 240V AC turning a 12" dia 4" wide stone... I need new needle bearings for the shaft first my current setup has too much friction.
