Treadmill Motor

I've had one of those 2 hp treadmill motors sitting in the shop for about three years or so. I grind on a Bader 2. How do I adapt this to my grinder and is it worth the effort? Can these motors be reversed? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

They are DC motors,so they can be reversed. The problem is that they are not made for continual use like a grinder. They will burn out fairly soon if you are usuing it heavily.Another problem is that they are not enclosed. The grit and dust in the shop will kill it quickly. All that said, you can make an adapter plate and hook it up to your grinder fairly easily. They are better for things like a disc grinder.

Hmmm... I have one on the KMG. By the end of the month it'll be the two year mark. No dust covers ... nothing, but a plastic fan I added on the shaft to keep the air moving.

I did spend an extra $40 for a back up motor if this one ever gives up.

Tom,

I've had a treadmill motor (1 1/2 HP) on my grinder for about a year, like Steve, no problems.

Thanks for all the info. Now I need to find a picture or hear from somebody that's rigged one up for a Bader 2. The motor I have came with a fan.

Hey you missed placed Yankee. You can always save your pantyhose and cover the motor with it, to keep the dust out on it. ;)
Beaver told me thats how he uses his old hoseiry.

I have a 2 hp on my grinder that is going on it's 5 year mark now and a 1 hp on my metal cutting bandsaw that is going on it's 5 year mark also,Put a small one on a small buffer a year ago and none have enclosed ends on them. Some day they will grow up and become Baldor motors that I have in the bus waiting for a controller. But heck the tread mill motors are still running and I get them all the time in the scrap yard so if one ever burns up I have plenty more....
I am planing on putting one on my little Chinese made drill press also one of these days..
as for putting one on a Bader 2 I am not sure but with a little thinking and patienece anything is possiable.

You'll have to excuse Indian George Rebello, making all that hot relish has turned his brain to mush. He used to be a nuclear physicist, now he can't even spell it. Did I spell it right?

HEHEHE!!! What brain???????
  I going to tell Sister Agnes that you are picking on me.

Yes it is reversable by simply switching the motor leads. If yours is as I expect, a 115 volt, while rated by them as 2 HP it is actually 1 1/2 HP (about 16 amps maximum?).

Connect it to a 1 1/2 HP Dc motor drive.
