I hope someone can help me with an act of treason.

In August 2008 I became a hemiplegic, with my left side paralyzed, and I’m in a wheelchair. As a result, I can’t reach into pants pockets, so I carry everything in a travel vest. This impacts my choice of knife, as it has to be a one handed opener, and have a clip so I can have easy access to it from a vest pocket.

Now I have always admired the Buck 110, an American classic. Before I got sick I got a 112 (I have small hands, another factor that influences knife choice). Afterwards, I added a one-armed bandit so I could open it, but the lack of a clip and the weight means I can’t really carry.

The 110 is one of the most copied knives ever, and in my case function really has to dictate what I carry. I recently found out about the Benchmade 13150, which is very close to the 110, has a good weight and a clip, and the easy opening Axis lock to boot.

The problem is that this is quite expensive, above my budget. So does anyone know of any other Buck 110 clone, with one-handed opening and a clip?

I realize that this is treason, but my circumstances dictate that I ask.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi ASbob,

Sorry to hear of your condition. I think you should read the threads on Paradigm (Pro or Avid). They are assisted opening knives and can be easly activated and closed with one hand. They also have a clip, they don't have the 110 look though.

You might also look at the Bucklite series. They have pocket clips and opening studs, size and design close to the 112/110, lightweight, and retail under $30.

Sorry to hear about your turn of events.

Others have made great suggestions and they are all good ones. There is also a Quick Fire that should be out this year which would be worth a look. The Vantage is also worth a good look, $30 on the street normally.

Buck has a Sirius on their web special page now for $30 IIRC, worth a look. I like the one I have and it's a one handed deal.

STR on this site has also moded some Bucks in the past with great results. I have a 501 from him which I like a lot. He added a pocket clip and thumb stud to a classic which I really have enjoyed.

Guess my bottom line is don't rule Buck out. For the price of the Benchmade you could try several nice Bucks or have one moded for your wants.

I could be mistaken, other on this site would know far more about this than I do, but I think most auto knife laws allow persons with certain disabilities to carry an auto knife. Most come with some type of a clip.

Sorry to hear of your condition.

The Buck 179 HiLo is a good chunk of knife, and my edc. Has a clip and is a frame lock. Might be an option if you have ok strength in your right hand.

The slightly smaller version of the 179 is the model 174. Only difference is its smaller size. They are very close in size to the 110 and 112. Just slightly smaller and lighter.

I'd get a 102 woodsman and find a way to fit it and sheath into a vest. Even have a friend sew a special pocket for it.

But I'd look for an older Woodsman with 440 C steel blade. Or 154 CM, or perhaps some other higher end steel (BG-42, S30V, ATS-34) but Id first look for a classic 440 C Woodsman.

First and most important, let me thank everyone for their solid suggestions and warm thoughts. I am much better than I was a year ago, back at work and driving. And the right hand is fine.

There are many fine suggestions here. I am thinking about the BuckLite and the modified 112. From what I’ve read on these forums, my state (CA) does not permit the disabled to legally carry auto knives, so I would rather not chance that.

I also may have not explained myself well. I am looking for something that looks like the 110/112, but is lighter, with clip and one handed operation by any manufacturer, not necessarily for another Buck knife (hence the treason). I just love that classical profile. Anybody got any ideas?

On the BuckLite: does anybody know the actual closed length of the Medium? Buck’s website lists it as 4 ¾, while KnifeCenter and KnifeWorks both have it at 4 3/8. I figure it’s four and three of something, either quarters or eighth!

I was under the impression that Cali allowed sub 2 inch blades to be automatic, I always see Cali legal being displayed on short knives.

As far as classic look, no joy there, but there a LOTS of one handed knives out there.

CA as a state allows for under 2" autos, but city laws can be more restrictive. The Buck light 110 or 112 are the way to go for your needs.

I can't think of any knife that meets your requirements.

If I were in your situation I'd have a wheelchair mount designed to conceal a Buck 120 and I'd have Packrat's Buck 179 HiLo as my legal knife.

But that's just me. I'd also have a Glock 26.

I have a lot of enemies because I talk blunt.

:D

Best of luck to you and glad to hear you are making a good recovery.

That is an amazing offer! Can you post a pic or a url of what the knife looks like? The only thing I could find is this:

http://www.888knivesrus.com/product...6FX-ODYSSEY-LINERLOCK-PARTIALLY-SERRATED.html

Is that the knife?

The number 186 was "recycled" by Buck and used for the Odyssey. I believe the one he's talking about is a titanium framed 110 offshoot that Buck made a few years back then dicontinued.
