I dont really buy knives anymore, but i'm always on the hunt for strays and hard luck cases, found this in a box full of rusted and busted knives for $2.50... it was completely rusted shut had green paint all over the blades, some adhesive stuff, broken secondary blade and was just a complete mess, normally i wouldve said no way, but the long pull, strong swedge and bone handle and federal shield said it was somethin at one point so i bought it...
Few hours of gentle cleaning, realized the knife opened nicely, no blade wobble and has halfstops, a little more aggressive with the cleaning (skin the cat) as it was dire and i could make out the tang
Wester-Stone (arched)
INC.
NEW YORK

searched it and found a scant few nuggets but i guess its WW1 era... Anybody else have any wester-stone examples?
Any way its a solid knife albeit rustic but its in my edc rotation for the time being, i'll bet it wouldve been a real looker in its day... also got an ulster BSOA knife that had seen better days, still tinkerin with that one but it was also $2.50
regards
Gene

Nice work on a great find. It's a looker again.
I'll be interested to hear more about Wester-Stone; I never heard of them.

It is magnificent!! bravo! I too have not heard of Wester-Stone ( Wester Brothers - yes )and would love to see more examples. I love these kinds of threads!

thanks guys
the secondary blade was either broke a long time as any pointy stick ya edges are pretty well rounded off or somebody blunted it for the same reasons, this scan actually looks a bit harsh, natural light is more accurate and forgiving on the poor thing.
I really am surprised at how well it walks and talks and zero blade wobble

Sad the secondary is broken, but still a nice knife. If I find any info on the maker i'll let you know

Wester stone is brand of imported knives from Germany that was used by Wester Bros. ca 1915. It's a great find very good looking teardrop jack with great bone and nice spear point blade.

Thanks!
the threads i posted allude to New York Knife Co. and Walden as producing knives after trade stopped with Germany during WW2
i like the old one eyed dog:D
Its in my pocket now

Neat knife, Gene. You fixed it up nicely.

... Anybody else have any wester-stone examples?...

I only have one and it's marked Wester Bros. I bought it because of the unusual construction. It's a split spring... with the split spring reversed from the normal orientation (the main blade doesn't straddle both springs). The blades have a configuration similar to a stockman... but the third blade is a canopener/caplifter and it straddles part of both springs... and also has a catch bit.

The blades have an impressive grind.

That looks really nice good job on the deep clean.

thanks i skinned the proverbial cat on this one but quite literally it was so rusted and seized up with green paint (?) that i figured what the heck, i intended to carry it if i could get it clean and its far from being a museum piece.
Still need to sharpen it properly, but i'm still carrying it

once i get a new camera i'll throw up some proper picts and shoot some of the Ulster, anybody know a trick for tightening up a wobbly main blade with a swinden key bolster system, the rubber mallet and phonebook doesnt work, ive read there isnt much you can do, but heres hoping

I like the clean up job you did Gene, the knife isnt bling-bling shiny, I think you have done an excellent job on that lovely looking old knife, I see you mention that you bet it was a real looker in its day, I think that knife today is a real looker-what a bargain!

Good work, Ivan. The knife looks great. The broken secondary is sad, but not bad. It gives the knife what is was built for... tools sometimes get broken.

Congratz on that great looking piece! :)

Forgot to post my only Wester bros. A knife I had the luck to pull off eBay at low price. Note it says New York on the stamp
