Treating/finishing Micarta.

I have a number of micarta handles knives. My latest, the BK9. I sprung for the linen Micarta scales like I have on my BK7. This particular set is very "fuzzy" although the side to the tang was very smooth and shiney. Maybe their cutting tools were a little dull?

At any rate, this would seem to be even more porous than my other Micarta scales...although they all hold a little water even if they dry quick.

What is a good product to seal these with? I have some Minwax Tung Oil Finish that works great on wood. Ironically there is no Tung Oil in it. It is some linseed oil, some varnish, some mineral spirits. The idea with this product is that it achieve a Tung Oil finish without the great effort of the real thing. I feel like it works quite well. But of course all my experience is on wood.

Any ideas? Thanks.

The short answer is "go for it" :)

The finer you sand it, the less fuzzy it will be. Any oil finish that works on wood should also work on micarta, it just won't soak up anywhere near as much. I use "clear" Danish oil, a similar blend to the stuff you're talking about... the same stuff I use on unstabilized woods.

Just wipe on a light coat, let it dry and burnish with a piece of clean cotton or denim. Repeat until you get bored of doing it. Likely, it will only require a couple coats anyway.

Thanks James. I am going to use what's on hand. I found this stuff right next to Danish oil and in the furniture world, they are used for the same sorts of thing. I am going to go for it! Thanks.
