Hola!

FNG here (new guy). Nice forum. I've looked through the archives and haven't been able to find threads on the pre-cut treatment of handle scales. Anyone have links or suggestions? I like to buy up old blades and new ones too, mostly scandinavian, and do strange and unjoojooal things with handles in wood and horn. Looking forward to sharing.
Also interested in heat-treatment and annealing.

Thanks,

Paco

I think you need to be more specific. What woods are you planning on using? Is the lumber dry? What unusual things do you have planned?

I tend to pick woods that require very little treatment. Most rosewoods simply require some oil to bring out the color. Others require resin impregnation to enhance their durability.

p.s. You need to be very specific regarding heat treat. It is a complex science/art with many variables (steel, equipment, technique).

If you're going to be playing around with heattreatment, I'd suggest checking out the Shop Talk board. That's a bit "deep" to qualify as maintenance or tinkering.
