treating with Turco

I haven't made a Stainless knife in a while and just recently finished a couple and went to heat treat them. I always had used Turco and never had any problems with it till now. I finished the blades to 400 and 600 grit and then cleaned them and double dipped them in Turco. I put them in the oven which was around 400 to 500 degrees and proceded to clean up and then a puff of smoke came out of the oven. I opened the door and pulled out a knife and it was burnt black, more so towards the tip then the handle. I never use to wrap them with SS and turco worked fine, but this time it never. Has anyone out there had the same problem, and does Turco go bad after a certain time, mine is about 2 years old or so. Thanks in advance

Hey there Kelly,

I of course don't have an oven or turco, but I've been around Murry Southgates enough at heat treat time to have a guess. Murrys Turco seems to have faded with age, as it doesn't leave the nice even finish it used to when grinding off. I think it does "go bad" after a certain amount of time. Never had a "black knife" experience yet though. Was it totally dry when you put it in? That may have contributed as well. Anyway, hope someone that knows something here can help you out!
