I squirrel hunt a lot, more than all my other hunting ventures combined. I like to pistol hunt for the added chalenge and have posted threads in the past of my days hunting with my customized MKIII hunter with a Leupold 2-7VXIII and then an Leupold 4x FXII scope.

A couple weeks ago I put a micro red dot on my pistol so that I would have to be closer to get clean shots on the squirrels. This forces me to be a better hunter/stalker and will give me good practice for spot and stalk deer hunting with a longbow.

I took the new set-up out for it's maiden hunt and this is the day's bounty. There are four head shots and two center chest shots (those two stood up and looked at me....BIG MISTAKE)

I also learned that I need to insulate my water bottle better because it froze solid, as did my camelback (bursting the seal:grumpy:)

Md 25v, great looking pistol. I have the Ruger 22/45 & probably shoot it more than all my others. No scope as yet because of the size of the scopes, but that micro looks like it could work. Nice shots on both pics & tree game. . . :)
Be safe.
p.s.: On the Nalgene & Camelbak, just fill it 3/4 full, leaves room for the ice to expand. Have done this for over 45+ years outdoors in weather as low as -15* & seems to have worked so far. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip but I'm trying to keep them from freezing:D
I was thirsty half the day because I forgot to put the neopreme sleves on my camelback and metal water bottle. They were both less than 3/4 full at the time but the seam that ruptured in the camelback was at the junction of the bag and the tube. I didn't expect to be out as long as I was but the hunt was going so well I didn't feel like going in. Tomorrow I'll put the sleeves on everything just so I don't have to worry about it.

md25v good bag, all you now are the dumplings. we're going sat. & try to get some rats with 22s iron sights. got 2 last week--were'nt head shots though.

Mmmm dumplings, good idea. I just finished cleaning the last one and I tossed one of the skins outside to watch the crows fight over it. They are lucky I don't need any fletching feathers right now.

Seems like even with the neoprene sleeve a camelbak will eventually freeze, if out long enough. I wonder if one of those camelbak carriers like the pro cyclists use worn UNDER a jacket would be better...

Great shooting. According to Clint Eastwood "A man's gotta know his limitations" and I know I can't hit water from a boat with a pistol.

Yeah, I know it would freeze eventually. When I'm out all day walking I usually stop around noon for lunch and make a small fire that will thaw or dry out whatever equipment I need. That's actually why I like my metal water bottles.

Love the "Clint" quote. I actually used to compete in pistol silhouette shoots. I started hunting with a pistol because it made me get closer than a rifle and I could use the gun I was most comfortable with shooting close range (inside 50 yards) targets. With this red dot I can only take headshots from around 20 yards max with a rest or 15yards offhand in order to be certain of a clean kill with a head shot, little bit farther for chest shots but not much. I am really enjoying the challenge and hope to transfer the stalking skills to bowhunting from the ground in January with a bow that I made myself.

Good shooting.Have you ever used your Ruger on Squirrels with the stock sights? I have a Mark II with stock sights.

I went today with a Marlin M1. My first 22 rifle, that I hunted with as a kid .Got it for Christmas in 1977, I believe.Should have took the nylon 66. Got five shots at one squirrel and never did hit it. Took that cheap scope off when I got home. It doesnt let in enough light.

I use the irons on that one for bullseye competitions but I don't like the V shaped rear sight on the hunter series. I have a MKII and a pair of 22/45s and they have standard notch style rear sights. I prefer shooting them with irons.

Nice shootin! I have one of those also, but mine is the 22/45 version. Great little pistol,,,

My God, I damn near spit green tea all over my monitor when I read this. . . :D
This is classic.
Be safe.

I also have a MKIII Hunter and was wondering what kind of grips you have on yours, and where you ordered them. Thanks.

I have the Ruger Mark III and its a sweet shooter. I just have open sights, but its pretty accurate.

At what distances were you shooting? Great shooting!!

I have two others with open sights, notch and post style, that shoot great. I just don't like the V-shaped rear sight on the hunter model
Distances range from 10-18 yards offhand to around 25 with a rest. I'm shooting Eley match sub-sonics.

It has taken it's fair share of squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and other small game over the last 20 years or so.
