Hey guys just wondering if these are quality fixed blades? have searched and it seems to be positive but no reviews on any of the combat types im looking at. Maker is Jim behring of Treeman knives

Duties are going to be my go to camp/hiking knife so needs to be strong enough to do a bit of chopping and what not. the majority of the wood where i live is hardwood as well

the knife is the treeman combat bowie/fighter

the combat machete is also under consideration

any input and advice greatly appreciated :)

Jim Behring Sr. - Very well made, purchase without hesitation. Upstanding and talented maker. His son, Jim Jr. is equally talented. I have both of their knives.

Either one or both of those knives will serve you well.

Granted, I prefer their Scagel inspirations, but the Treeman combats I've seen and handled have been excellent.

Really, it would be hard to do better.

Agreed with AKC it would be very difficult to do better. The Combat Bowie is among the best large knives available.

AKC the small scagel is in fact in my sights as well just a bit later on lol, I just feel the ruggedness of the combat blades would be better suited to the environment I live in, type in Pilbara western australia in google images and you'll see what i mean with the outdoors

hardest part now is bowie or machete, guess i could just get both :)

also do you think I'd be better off with the standard blade or the sawback type where the saw teeth are located above?

I personally have no use for a sawback blade, but that's a choice better left to the end user.

I'd much rather have a dedicated folding saw for those purposes. YMMV :D

I grew up in Hawai'i, fairly similar enviroment. Spent a LOT of time in the bush.

Im a bit nervous about having that second edge, knowing my luck id end up cutting myself with the sawback lol might be better off sticking with my Felco folding saw

Havent been to Hawai so excuse my ignorance? but I would have thought due to its geographical location it wouldnt be very arid, be more lush green and tropical. where i live is described loosely as coastal desert

also that bottom Scagel you have from Treeman is making me drool, is that your design or the talented Mr Behring's?

Windward side of the islands are fairly lush and tropical, leeward side can be quite a bit drier. Not unlike Australia, which is really just a VERY large island, with you being located on the leeward side.

Most sawbacks on knives are really fairly useless, except perhaps for notching. Best saw in knife form? - SAKs, but I'd rather just have a good folding saw. Best one I've seen in really lightweight form is the SpyderSaw from Spyderco. I think they still make it. (Oh, I just checked, perhaps not. But you may be able to find one on the secondary market.)

The top knife is from Jim Jr., the bottom one is from Jim Sr. Both their composition. And just as nice as they look.... :D

Yep thats it, Jim sr responded to my emails & it looks like I'll be purchasing the combat bowie plain with patterned black & grey handle with the strong possibility of getting the combat machete when he makes a new batch in a few weeks
