OK, I thought it was about time to get off my lazy butt and start exercising. Given that I have bad knees and can't run (motorcycle accident - the truck won ), and given that I don't really like swimming, bicycling seemed logical. So today I made the fatal mistake of visiting my local bike shop (Revolution Cycles). They hooked me up with a Trek 7200 that was an '09 model with over $100 off, since they have the 2010 models in stock now. Walked out the door with helmet, water bottle, etc. accessories and tax for $500. Not bad from where I sit (on the bicycle, of course). Overall, it was a really stress-free shopping experience and they were very good at finding me the right bike at the right price. Now I just have to get my butt out there and start using it!

The price sounds like fair deal; everything around here (Concord/Walnut Creek area) seems to go for a little higher than suggested retail.

Start light, build up endurance & distance. I'm actually looking forward to my rides now. And remember: ibuprofen is your friend.

Trek has always put together solid bikes, even in the "entry level" class. You still see huge numbers of those old solid-frame 820s rolling around.
This particular machine is what they're calling a "fitness" bike these days; and is likely well suited for your purposes.
