Trend away from guards??

A trend I have noticed in recent years with many custom makers of hunting and military knives is the absence of a guard to protect the user. Why? Looks? Ease of manufacture? Personally, I really appreciate a pronounced guard on any knife that will see hard use in my hand. Stubbing injuries are no fun. I realize a guard can get in the way of a rocking chop like a chefs knife, but that is really not the primary function of hunting and military blades. Just wondering why? TIA

I like a guard on my using knives just makes me feel safer.
I guess it does come down to money. Guards do cost the the knife maker in material and time wich equals a more expensive product.
I guess I don't mind paying the cargo for what I feel is my own self protection.

Trend away from guards? Not around my fingers! I like a good solid single guard. I can do alot of things, but I can't get any more fingers.

I like knives with and without guards. There is a style of hunter/skinner that I have come to really like. It has no guard. Could I cut my hand? Sure, but I haven't yet. I don't use my knives for dressing animals so chances are I will never have a mishap. If I do I will let you guys know.

Edited to correct a poorly spelled word.

In Joe Flournoy's case, he can make a guard second to none! I just got the Flornoy knife pictured in the 'Trend Cutters' article in June Blade and it is done as well as anyone can do it. I believe that it is easier(less skill involved) and cheaper not to put a silver soldered guard on a knife. In Joe's case, he can do either extremely well!-Dick
