Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, KAI Brawler & Edge Pro Apex problem

I have a KAI Brawler that I've never sharpened. I noticed it getting a bit dull so I went on KAI's website. They recommend sharpening their folding knives to a 18 - 20 degree angle. So 20 degrees, right?

I applied Sharpie to the edge of the Brawler and started on the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker with their medium stone in the 40 degree (inclusive) slots.

I noticed that on the left side of the blade, half of the Sharpie was removed (towards the middle of the blade to the back) and half wasn't. On the right side of the blade, all of the Sharpie was removed.

I thought this might be a blade profiling issue so I replaced the medium grit stones with their diamond ones (still in the 40 degree (inclusive) slots). I remarked the blade and got to work.

Same results: On the left side of the blade, half of the Sharpie was removed (towards the middle of the blade to the back) and half wasn't.

Is this a edge profile problem? Can the Edge Pro Apex fix it? I've noticed the sticks in the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker can get a little wobbly at times.

Seems like an uneven factory sharpening job. Not uncommon.
Just go ahead and sharpen it to whatever dps you like. You may have to remove more material on one side until it is even.

Hi,
yes, its common for knives to come with uneven edge bevels,
and yes, the edge pro apex can fix it,
but the sharpmaker can also fix it :)
it can be as simple as attach coarse sandpaper (p220) to your sharpmaker rods,
then grind on the shoulder in half degree increments (shim/wedge to get different angles)

Reference Efficient grinding reprofiling with sharpmaker 1-3 minutes * 10 steps = 10-30 minutes total to drop angle from 20 degrees per side to 15 degrees in half degree steps , Reprofiling/Sharpening CPM 3V? - Page 2 - Spyderco Forums

View attachment 804998 To save time, you need a bigger Sharpmaker. I usually count strokes on each bevel to get the edge centered. One side of your edge was ground at a more obtuse angle. You may need to take more off the side that is ground to the apex to get the needed centering. Try to get the bevels matched for length. You only have to do this once.

I quit using the guided slots on my Sharpmaker. I only use the slot on the bottom end for sharpening scissors. I get great results doing this and it eliminates the angle limitations.
