Triad Lock Engaging differently on Recon 1 than on Lawman?

Hello everyone,

Been a while since I posted in general discussion. I noticed recently that it seems as if my 2010 Recon 1 seems to have a "lighter" lockup than my CS American Lawman. I don't know if it's due to the lawman having stainless liners and the recon 1 just being G-10 or perhaps the spring on the lawman is just tougher. They both have excellent lockup but the lawman's lockup has a louder and stiffer lock when engaged. Normally this wouldn't bother me but I was curious if anyone else had noticed this.

Being an LEO it is important that I don't lose a finger if I ever have to bust a window with either knife or stabbing car hoods/cinder blocks/hair whittling/ etc... :D

Ps. Got everyone I met at work very interested in knives

Thanks for any input, J.

Both my 2010 Recon-1 and American Lawman feel the same to me, lockup wise. No play with either. CS might have changed the shape of the lockbar and/or tang on the Recon. That could change the way the lockup feels on yours. I wouldn't worry about it. I wish Demko could get his Triad lock onto some Spydercos.

J, , I finaally got to handle an AL without liners and the Recon 1 last week at a knife store up in Arnold where I had to work.

I did compare them with my lined version of the American Lawman.

I definatly noticed a diffrerence in lockup. The steel liners do make a difference IMO.

You can adjust the lock spring tension. I took my 2010 Recon 1 apart and smoothed out the action. You can take the spring out and slightly bend it to adjust lock stiffness.

Now if the tuff will be a tri-ad instead of a RIL....

The recon and the linnerless lawman are a little improved over the steel liner lawman as far as the "action" goes. Still just as strong, but a little easier to function. (it's all in the rocker pin location vs the release vs length)

That's great to hear that it's not just me :o

And it's good to hear from Mr. Demko hiimself

I still like the louder sound of the lined lawman (and subconciously I think my fingers do too :)). I suppose the 4" blade of the Recon 1 is longer thus easier to manipulate than the shorter "stubby" blade on the lawman.

EDC'd the American Lawman today and it cut open my new badge straight from the thick plastic :D

Mine are opposite. The Law man is very smooth and the Recon 1 has a stiffer lock. My AK47 is also pretty tough to disengage.

I think it just has to do with the tolerances of the particular knife.

So I have something similar going on. I have 3 Recon 1's with flawlessly working Tri-ad locks, but my new AK will sometimes get "sticky" while engaged and takes ALOT of effort to disengage. No problems with the Spartan either.

I figure it will wear in though

At what time did he state that? Because I know he has talked about a frame compression lock before. Do you have a link?

Hi Sverre,

Same basic shape. We'll use a Titanium RIL.

Yep, I remember reading this post.

Glad you think so! My uncle is the owner :D

Awesome :D

He's real nice guy , we talked for about 45 minutes the other day. I walked away with the Shanghai Shadow that day , sort of a modern smatchet. :)

Funny how certain things bother some people. My lock on my AL is sticky and doesnt bother me in the least , I know it will wear in and I really do not even notice it.

I was marveling just last night at what a great knife my AL is. :D
