TriAd lock issue

Hi everyone.

I use on daily basis Recon 1 xhp and love it.

Recently I have noticed strange thing in relation to the lock.

If I flick the blade really hard it will lock but the lock is visibly not flush with handle which causes slight up and down play. We are talking millimeters here.
When I open the knife with less force, it locks perfectly and there is no play at all.

I took the folder apart, cleaned it but the issue remains.

Any thoughts?

Regards

Michal

I'm sure not able to recreate that effect on any of my tri-ads. The only way I can get up/down play, is if I hold the lock open just a hair. Could it be a loose or stripped screw anywhere?

I have seen many knives exhibit strange behavior when the blade bounces off the stop pin too hard. Could it be a symptom of how hard you are flicking open the blade?

Like the Doc says....
Me:. Hey Doc, it hurts when I go like this. What should I do?
Doc:. Don't go like this.

That it a sound advice indeed, reminds me of my mother's common sense, the virtue that seems forgotten these days:)

Usually it's the other way around...opening soft may keep the lock bar from fully seating, but opening hard works fine. Depending on how worn it is, maybe the bottom of the lock bar is bouncing off the bottom of the blade notch when opening hard?

Possibly, it is fairly new knife and not much used.
I guess i will just keep observing how things will develop....

As jlauffer said, usually hard opening is the solution to the lock not seating properly.

But you say that hard opening is resulting in play, and that the lockbar becomes not flush with the handle.

Do you mean that it sits lower, or higher than the handle when opened hard?

It sits higher if opened hard, protruding slightly above handle( matter of millimetres).

Strange, that’s not something I’ve observed happening to my triads. Usually it is the other way around.

Wish I could help. What is your method of hard opening?

Just a very hard flick of my wrist and forearm, the click is reassuring but the issue remains.
Dont get me wrong, it is not such a big of a matter, the play is very minimal and only felt when I really wiggle the knife. It is not affecting the performance. Just it would be good to know what is causing it.

Can you push the lockbar down to seat it properly after opening hard?

The lockbar pivots on a pin. The hole in the lockbar is slightly larger than the pin to allow it to move slightly forwards or backwards.

My guess is that on a hard fast opening the lockbar is contacting the triad stop pin more than normal and not full dropping into the blade tang. My guess is it will wear in and the problem will resolve itself.

:) Like everyone already said .

Most common problem during break in is to have lock stick . Kinda the opposite of your experience .

I never had a Tri-ad that didn't eventually wear in nicely . Some just take much more time than others .

 Don't hesitate to open hard and fast . The lock is designed for that , but it can make the lock stick worse in the short run , until worn in fully .

Try putting a dab of oil on the pivot of the lockbar(not the knife pivot). It’s oval which allows the triad lockbar to travel slightly forward and back. Sometimes the inside of the lockbar pivot/fulcrum isn’t finished well and would cause the lockbar to not travel completely causing the issue you described.
What makes it worst is that for Recon 1, coldsteel still uses the crappy teflon coating for the lockbar which is much thicker than the DLC coating on the blade. This throws the tolerance out of whack. Hopefully it should get better as the coating on the lockbar gets worn in.
You can also try oiling the front of the lockbar where it contacts the stop pin and see if it’ll help. I’ve seen galling on these areas where steel contacts steel.

Happened to my AK-74 (or was it 47? Can't quite remember :))

I wave hard opened it with the pocket loads of times until it sorta worn away and it became nice lockup all the times.

I'll hard open it until it seats properly. I think it is maybe due to the lockbar parts and the blade's tang's cutoff are a bit rough and needs to be worn smooth a bit :)

I know EXACTLY OF WHAT YOU SPEAK!.....I had the same issue when opening hard but it did go away.... as long as its not a discontinued model (It half is and half isnt if that makes sense! XHP!) you could always send it back? i would keep with it and see what happens

is this thread too old to post in already? silly question but, some people get their feelings hurt when you post in "old" threads, anyway, i don't see the point in opening a folding life with such obnoxious force, my tri-ad lock sticks when its new, and i can even see where its sticking cause the coating is nicked off in that area, but other wise, try to use some finesse, and dare i say, panache? you just have to caress it a little bit

With the wave openers , at least , it's not going to work to go easy .

Have the same issue with my Ultimate Hunter I have. Quite a few years ild now. Still carry it, still locks. Has some play, cuts great though :)
