Just got back from taking my boy for his first Trick-or-Treating! He had his first candy too, and now he's acting like an addict. We don't get many kids at our house, but a block over is the 'nice' neighborhood where kids were lined up at the doors!

Had a great time myself too; I haven't been Trick-or-Treating in 25 years or more. The big excitement was a bear in a tree. Game and Fish was trying to get it down while keeping the kids out of the way.

Yep, I took my boy (aged 8) out last night and we walked around. He had a blast, and I'm glad. His mom had misgivings, and we'd planned to take him to the local "safe" event at a hotel. He's been before, but he lobbied pretty urgently against that, on the claim that "...Doing the same thing every time gets old." So I argued on his behalf, and we ultimately came to a compromise. Since our neighbourhood is a bit, er..."questionable," (i.e., infested with crack houses and morons), we resolved to take him over to a nearby area with better prospects. I took him out just after dark, and we hit maybe fifteen or twenty houses in all. The kid brought home about five pounds of LOOT!

It brought back a lot of really fond memories, and he kept saying at every house, "This is the VERY BESTEST Halloween of my WHOLE ENTIRE life!!" Folks were really friendly, and (thankfully, as he's a bit timid) nobody tried to jump out at him or grab him or anything. Nothing marred the evening, and he went to bed with a smile on his face. :D

Tonight, he'll probably go to bed with a stomach ache... :p

Amen, to keeping the Trick-or-Treat tradition alive. I took our 8-year-old daughter, and opted to skip the "safe" event at the local school. She had a blast, I got to relive my childhood memories, and we got to spend some time actually talking to our neighbors (gasp!). Good stuff all the way around.

I was glad to see some organized events in town, in addition to the door-to-door Trick-or-treating. There was a party downtown at the park after school, and about 9pm there was a hay wagon filled with about 50 kids riding down the main street.

Amen, to keeping the Trick-or-Treat tradition alive.
Although our modern Halloween traditions aren't particularly old, (about the same age as our modern Christmas traditions) the roots of Halloween have been around for thousands of years. I'm apathetic about the superstitious religious origins of our holidays, but I think it's important to pass on family and community traditions.
