Anyone know how other folks do this? I've been using files, Dremel tool, and a LOT of sanding. This one is O-1, ivory micarta, brick red spacers, steel pins. Thanks for any info.

Wow, that looks like a lot of work!

I use everything you said. I don't think there is much of an easier way.

IMHO one of the most talented and experienced at sculpting metal on knives is Wolfgang...his stuff is pretty mind blowing

Man, Richard, you shame me! That's cool as all get out. Not only do you have the guts to carve steel, but your own very special style. This is great, keep em coming.

Did you darken the blade or is that color an artifact of scanning?

Richard, I think you got the hang of it. Keep doing it just that way. The results are great! The only thing else I can suggest is a rotary file in a drill press. I do that sometimes and if you take small cuts and have a steady hand it works.

Thanks, guys. Dave- I didn't clean out the hollows after heat-treat which left them dark and I soaked the knife in lemon juice to give it a patina, also. Peter, thanks for the tip. I can think of a couple ideas I'd like to try using that technique.

Yeah, lots of work--but look what he ended up with. Very cool.

Thats pretty neat Richard, as some one else posted you should try scrapers and chisels . Working with the right tools you can remove a lot of material very quickly and cleanly. If you send me a email I'll give some more detailed info on how to make and use these tools.

Richard,
You wouldn't have anymore info on the scrappers or know a site that might have it would you? Thanks.
Tom
