Last Thursday I made a trip to Ellenville and Wallkill, NY.
I was in Ellenville to visit the old Schrade plant and to find the Canal Street Cutlery operations.
The old Schrade plant is a huge manufacturing building right off the main road in Ellenville. Its been left alone since the closing with the Imperial Schrade sign still on display. The grounds and guard building have all gone to seed. I heard the building has been sold but was not able to find out to whom. Spoke with the guard whom while friendly enough would not allow access into the building. Saying there was nothing but some old machines left all stock having been removed. After taking a few pictures I decided to move on. Less than a mile away is the Canal Street Cutlery building housed in what is the original Schrade Walden site in Ellenville. The building is unmarked but I was able to find it with the directional help of a local hardware store clerk whom knew the building.
Hearing the sounds of buffers/grinders, I walked up a flight of stairs in the old building walking right onto the production area. Again no signs of the companies name but it was pretty obvious I was in the right place. One of the grinders noticed me and called Dave Swinden over whom was very nice but I could tell they were really not set up to receive visitors. There were about a dozen people working on finishing up an order and were quite busy.
Dave showed me what they were up to and told me I could just walk through the the area and knock on Joe Huffnagles door. Joe was very nice and explained they were going to set up an area for visitors sometime in the future. There is no retail store or place to purchase knives at the site and I would not encourage anyone to visit without contacting them 1st.
After leaving CSC I drove over the mountain to Wallkill (about 20 miles) to visit with LT. .

you sir are a cad!!!!

being a upstate new yorker i have to support the locals-so now i have to buy a knife from these guys-you better hope i dont like it-last thing i want is to fall for another great ny knife maker-

and im having a hard time buying the one on ebay or ag russell over the ones at the company sight even though they are more$$ because of my loyalty to the few ny'ers with a job anymore-so im paying double-

that is why in my opion you sir are a cad!!

edit-
just finished the purchase of a muskrat from canal st cutlery(not double like the deal on ebay)-i even supported ny by paying tax's :)

He must be suffering "babemobile lag", similar to jetlag, but involving a sportscar instead. After all, he DID say he went to the home of the famous Ellenville Maidens!!Zoom-zoom-zooom! I mean, surely he didn't take the soccer-mom car.

Codger :D

Awright, you guys got some 'splainin to do!!! I don't understand half the references in this thread!!!!!
Moderator; hey moderator (if there was one!) send this thread to the in-joke forum!! :D :D

I can explain some of the references but to fully understand them ya gotta go to the archives. Phil and I have a history involving the sports car thing which brought on the maids of Ellenville which was all following our discussions on ping pong, socks and thongs. Yes we do travel a bit in these boards!

Hi Irving,

Please don't forget important archived information relating to The Duke, Andy Devine, Excalibur, pool building, greatest hits, and of course the game of Chess.

Thank you.

Ok part two.
I traveled from Ellenville to Wallkill over Rt 52 which is quite a mountain passage, for my 2nd visit to LT. His house sits on a bit of a hill over looking a field of green grass which on my last trip was full of water and the local ducks were close enough to pet. This day was extremly hot and humid. I got the grand tour of the inside of the re-arrainged home with special attention paid to the new display area for the knives used in LT's 1st book and CD.
We spent quite a bit of time looking over the new stuff, mostly because LT couldnt drag me away from the older stuff I'd seen on the 1st visit. His entire inside of the house is a large display case. Just awesome for us knife collectors. Then we ventured outside. I was able to walk into the garage. Major difference from my last trip is that I was actually able to see that there was a floor to the garage. LT has been very busy sorting, stacking, and grouping his collectables. The boxes from LT's TN trip were just starting to be examined. We made it to the other out outbuildings where I was able to catch my breath in an air conditioned environment not caused from the heat and humidity but awe and excitement. After the outdoor tour we went back inside and passed some time swapping stories, looking at recent arrivials to his collection. Of course after all the outdoor activity I was able to quench my thurst with a few Crinks of Drown Royal that we toasted with. More looking then onto some real serious eating more story swapping. It was a great visit and I had to leave about 7:30 in order to arrive home back in NH at just about midnight.
Oh Ya.. Happy Birthday LT and thanks for the great visit.

Well, as long as you were looking at knives or maidens, I guess it's O.K. But thongs and ping pong balls  ?? I guess I will have to comb the archives!
