Triple bladed dagger origin help
I recently purchased this triple bladed dagger. The two blades fan out when handle is squeeze,, I have been told possible Indian or Persian ?
Any help would be much appreciated

I could be way off but it sounds like a parrying dagger (sword breaker?), the 3 blades together being used to catch/trap a sword. I have always wondered how practical they really were.

It has an Indian vibe, but with more traditional Chinese furniture? Strange.

If got a book at home that shows a couple examples of daggers like that and they were for parrying incoming attacks. If I was home I'd take a picture of the page. As far as origin I'm no help sorry.

From a quick Google, I would say you've got a variation on a weapon which is itself a hybrid. If you search for "Katar Pata", you'll see some things which are similar to what you've got.

While you're at it, you could email pictures to some of the people at the other end of those links, and see if they can help you out.

Either way, what a unique score! There are examples of three-bladed katars, but I've never seen anything quite like this.

There might be a mechanical similarity to scissors katar, but the item here bears pretty much no resemblance to a katar or pata, both of which have the blade in line with the forearm.

It would help to see better pictures of the blade decorations, markings and handle. There have been a wide variety of oddball Indian knives and swords, many of which are ethnographic and others which were fantasy pieces made to decorate European walls. The so-called scissor katar is believed to be an example of the latter. There are plenty of them around, but they are all later made pieces with poorly made blades.
