The scabbard on one of my khukuries was split (was a blem). I decided to contact Russ Ellis of Tritonworks scabbards and see what he could come up with. Russ is well known in the sword community and one of the greatest people you could be graced to know.

i decided to be easy on him as this was his first khukuri and scabbard so i gave him my Foxy Folly. ;) i told him that this was a typical khukuri, but one of the smaller and lighter types.

here are pics of before decoration and after. this scabbard has a wool inset! similar to sword scabbards, the wool helps prevent rust (natural lanolin in the wool) and provides a snug fit.

Nah, just immoral and fattening, most likely.

Drat it, I thought I was quoting you to a new post down at the bottom. Must be having one of those days where even staying in bed don't work either!!!

Okay Dave...can you email me the price for that?

By the way...it is a beautiful piece.

Excellent work! The fact that the fit is snug is very appealing to me as most of my khuks are loose in their scabbards. If Russ can come up with a good scabbard for the FF, he can probably make a scabbard for about any khuk.

Nice rig Dave. That's the original (bigger) FF, isn't it?

Looks like M-43 meets YCS. Heard the original FF is a biggie.

In my enviornment I'd worry about that wool retaining moisture.

But up there it's so dry you gotta worry about horn cracks!

BTW, what is the ornament? Looks like a Celtic triskele.

Thanks for the kind words guys. This kukri was a beast. I've not handled many of them, but certainly not one that big and hefty. I think you could chop a tree down with it. It is a beautiful piece too though. The round metal bits on the frog are actually pop rivets. Not strictly speaking historically accurate I don't guess but I was souping this one up for Dave as a show piece. The frog is still in some doubt. If he absolutely hates it when he gets it I'll make him a more traditional one. The interior of the scabbard is actually carved at different depths to account for the taper of the blade from spine to edge. That was a big pain I don't mind telling you. :) Sword guys worry about rust just as much (probably more) then you kukri folks do and I've never had anyone yet complaining about rust from the wool. I think it's because of the lanolin in the wool. It's a sort of natural grease and so doesn't tend to attract water. The ornament is just a little decorative piece I picked up somewhere. The little pieces that go from the center to the edges are actually little wing looking things. A celtic design wouldn't have been appropriate I didn't think. This one looks a bit more Asian.

The one downside of all this is now I find myself perusing the HI site trying to decide which kukri I want... DARN YOU DAVE!!!! I've got enough expensive hobbies!!!

thanks guys!

yes, it's the big foxy folly. and i love it. i cut myself with that thing due to the split sheath, so i thought Russ was the man to solve my problem.

if you want a real rough and tumble sheath rather than the decorative one i requested, i'm sure Russ could do one.

yes Russ, first thing you gotta do is buy yourself a nice 18" WWII. Stay away from the exotic blems though, those be MINE.

Nice! Very creative work and obviously well done. I like the frog just as it is, and definitely not to criticise, but is it strong enough? I know the original FF weighs close to 50 oz., and I see the snaps on the frog for adjustment, but I would be afraid they might slide up the sheath and drop the whole rig down. (?) What do you think dave?

Very cool work. Thanks for sharing!

i haven't received it yet, but will review it. i had the same thoughts but knew from the onset that i wanted a more decorative and storage purpose sheath as frankly, FF's are rare and i don't want to really go and and kill it.

i really like the looks of it though. Russ did an incredible job by the looks of it.

I think it will be strong enough to wear it about, but I don't believe you would want to go running through the woods with it. Like I told Dave I think I will need to invest in some heavier grade leather for the frogs if I end up doing this on a regular basis.

I was actually thinking a WWII pattern myself. I'm wondering why the differences I'm seeing there in design. Are there regional differences in kukris? Also what is a blem?

Blemish - Kukri that is functional but has a minor cosmetic issue.

Very much looking forward to your work on the scabbard for my Albion Sheriff.

Foxy is a monster, even by khuk standards. It is NOT balanced. Whereas a balanced sword might feel light in the hand, the center of mass in the FF is shifted far forward. You just have to lift it, and the chopping happens all on it's own! Still amazing to unsheath.

That's true, it handles much more like a falcata then anything else I've any experience with. That's no surprise I guess since prevailing theory has it that the Kukri is descended from the falcata or kopis.
