TRM Atom - are there variances in thickness or are they being ground thicker?

So I have had 2 atoms - I had one briefly and sold it - it was just too thin for me to feel comfortable to use... the tip especially just seemed super delicate.

Fast forward a year and a half... I decided to try another - so I purchased a LNIW Atom here - and I like it way better - the tip and grind seem thicker to me.

My current one (green micarta) is .020" behind the edge - I failed to measure my old one, but I believe it was ground thinner. The tips also seem different - with the new one being a little thicker (good thing IMO).

Don't get me wrong, I like a thin, slicey knife, but I also want a tip that will stand up to some use (insert joke).

Just was curious if my old or new model are a closer representative to what others have...

Here's a comparison pic of the tips:

I can’t say for sure but the one I had looked a lot like your “new” one. The difference in the tips is very apparent in your photos. The spine was more rounded like that pic, I got mine directly from TRM last year. Nice knife but ultimately didn’t get carried enough to keep around. I also hate the pocket clips, they’re about as stiff as a wet noodle.

Agreed on the clip... it's not my favorite... serviceable due to the lightweight nature of the knife, but it is a bit loosey goosey...

Ok, good to know - the old one was supposedly not used, but it did have some scratches and the guy later said he wasn't the original owner... I'm wondering if it was just re-profiled to within an inch of it's life... but that still wouldn't explain the thinner primary grind.

Anywho... Interested to see if anyone else has any input

Why don't you contact the manufacturer and ask them?
I may at some point... more just a passing curiosity of what others here have seen.

I also don't have the old one for exact measurements so pretty unscientific question.

I'm in TRM's facebook group, and I've never heard anyone mention a change in the grind. Hard to tell with the pictures since they're not the same angle, but the "old" one looks like it may not have been factory spec.

Yea sorry - that first pic is over a year old and I dug it up... ok that's kinda what I was hoping to hear honestly... is .020" behind the edge pretty close to what you have experienced?

My Neutron 2 (May 2021) is 0.020" behind the edge.
My Atom (June 2021) came from the factory with an uneven 25/75 grind that I sharpened out, so I can't say for sure what it was originally. It's close to 0.020" behind the edge now though.

The spine thickness at the tip of both knives is about 0.021" or so.

My atom is factory-inspected with a requested blade-recentering and custom scales. Three Rivers Manu is owned by a nice, well-informed lady; a pleasure
to speak with on the phone. It is indeed a great slicer, which is why i bought it. 0.023" BTE and 0.095" spine. Perfection for a casual carry.
