It occured to me this morning that we are seeing many new faces in our forum and they should get the long standing Uncle Bill welcome. Well met, all.
This forum has been a place of laughter and tears, comfort and ....beers (?) for a long time now. We've only had a few isolated problems with the internet phenomena of 'Trolls', and their damage has been very minimal.

When I first found Bladeforums, and Himalayan Imports in particular, I was stunned. This forum broke every internet rule. It was and is kind, wise, just, funny and true. Let's not allow any past to give suspicion more force than it deserves. The benefit of a doubt is the way to go. Trolls will out. They always do. But a cool reception, or unneccesary distance can leave an impact on all of us. And there isn't any reason for it- the handshake only does us and our tradition credit.

A Troll is a complex issue . There are many characteristics of a troll a good many of us posess . I think the discerning element here is degree and intent . To what degree is this person digressing from an accepted norm and why would this person be doing it .
There are a great many of us who digress from norms here,
and in truth within any group of reasonably inteligent people . We have to ask ourself on how many occassions and to what purpose does this individual deviate . If there is a constant and general raising of hackles among our co-freres it is safe to say something is amiss .
. It is the borderline cases which are the hardest to diagnose .

These cases usually consist of individuals who are not even aware or have become insensitive to the discord they create . I guess thats why moderators should be moderate in their way of thinking and decisive in their actions . A tough job to do .

I wonder if the fact that every one is armed has anything to do w/ most ppl acting civilized ?
Or that most don't have anything to prove to any one to get respect !
the cantina reminds of deer camp in a lot of ways
all we need is a card game & more beer lol

I think the deer camp analogy is a kind of compliment- I like it.

I think it is appropriate as well . In deer camps people are usually better behaved as they are less stressed and inapropriate behavior can be dealt with discipline or expulsion . Don,t no-body wan to get tossed so they behave accordingly . If you are in a camp where you feel uncomfortable it is a wise man who moves on . It doesn,t have to be you at fault just an incompatability .

Deer camp, huh?

Good analogy, although I'm presently sober and well fed - not the normal state of affairs at any deer camp that I've ever been to.

Dragn_flame, by "footwork" are you referring to my remarkable ability at dodging responsibility? ;) I don't recall moving my feet in that video.

That's nice of you to say, Nam.

I think all the Newbies have to do is keep posting good stuff. Good people always out, and true Trolls always fall apart.

Our new voices around here are not aware that we recently had to kick out, yet one more time, a destructive person who insists upon coming back over and over again. The forum is a little war weary.

People are going to relax when they see the new posters are OK.

Well, you have your left leg back on a R to L swing, as your body is twisting thru the swing, that L rear leg is moving out of the way even more, Kevin asked about the slowing down/controlling the energy at the end of a BIG swing, your video shows you moving the leg out of harms way as you twist thru the swing. In my kali training, we move the leg your swinging toward rearward as we begin the swing so we don't cut our leg, plus it adds twist (torque) to your swing> I do it automatically now from my teacher drilling us on foot work, on thurs nite this was really brought home to me, I took my dog to my friends for training, I gave my 15" AK to my friend as a gift, explaining the footwork to him, then I watched him swinging it thru the air, just missing his thigh by an inch or so, cussed him out & gave him another safety lecture
I wonder if there is a market to have the Kamis carve us some wooden trainers ? Of course you could just use a nice heavy stick to practice w/ before ya try hitting a home run w/ your khukuri, which is what I would advise any one new to big blades to do before trying to play zorro w/ something as potentially dangerous as a khukuri. Hmm looks like I should make my 1st contribution to the safety thread about this huh

Good advice Munk. You da man

Agreed. I think this is in the spirit of what Uncle Bill wanted. It's the hardest thing to do, and as is often the case, the right thing to do.

I confess. I have been distant and suspicious. Thanks for the admonition munk. All you new guys, I was the new guy too once and was received with open arms. Sorry I didn't do the same for you. I used to and got burned a couple times. That is my reason, but it is no excuse. My apologies. The Cantina has an open door. Come on in an sit and talk awhile. We still reserve the right to kick you out if you cheat, are disrespectful, or are just causing trouble. We can argue and disagree, but honesty, respect and being peaceful are the rules we abide by. Set out by our Uncle and followed by some guys we loved and lost. We take it seriously, but we still like to have a good time. You are welcome here to teach and learn and share and grow.

Now where's my beer? :D

Next round is on me, Bobwhite;)
We've seen you in action. You are one of the true defenders of HI, and i'm sure Uncle Bill is proud that you fight to uphold the truth. Mucho respect and imaginary rep points for that.
Munk, you are proving to be a great leader of the Cantina. Moderation is the key term. I respect Howard and Yvsa more than most of the men of my family line (wish it was a better compliment as it's not hard to do, but trust me it's still A LOT). However, your firm but kind hand is really keeping the place together. Deny it till the day you die, but i think just about everyone here would agree that you are doing your job in way that would make Uncle Bill smile. It's a bit of thankless job being the boundry setter and at times the party pooper, but you're doing a dang fine job.
You're right. This is the house that Uncle Bill built. A lot of time and pain went into creating just one place in all of cyberspace where all are welcome as long as they take their muddy trolling boots off and check their flame wars at the door. I remember strolling through the door a few years back as an idiot know-nothing. Now, over 3 years later I'm still an idiot know-nothing, but i have a hell of a lot more friends and the kind of knowledge that I can be proud to pass on my kids one day. I owe these new guys at least that much. Welcome friends. What I have is yours. Sit a spell. There is much wisdom and warmth in this room...and sometimes a crazy duck.

that you are doing your job in way that would make Uncle Bill smile.>>>>

Actually, I'm just the guy who crys at weddings. Howard Wallace has been all over the world, and is so smart he would have acheived escape velocity from the planet were it not for the heavy neutrinos...(or something like that) Yvsa is our Law and Order candidate, and knows both old school tools, metal and wood craft, folklore and NDN methods and traditions, as well as new school technology and machines. What he brings to the table is incalculable and precious. And Yangdu is steering, steeped both in her love for her husband and the rich tradition of her native land. What we got here is diverse and good and the way it's supposed to be.
