trouble creating account

A friend of mine is having trouble creating an account. He tells me that some kind of spam message is blocking him from registering. Has anyone heard of this?

"Some kind of spam message" doesn't give us much to work with.
Exactly what is this message?

believe the message he got says "trying to check a database for spammers and cant reach the database"
