This past week I went out to my stomping grounds for a day hike with my daughter and a friend.
This area is a perfect location for training in wilderness survival. The lowlands are covered with a huge forest that stretches for miles. The basin where I do most of my hiking/camping includes eleven waterfalls. The back border is a large mountain ridge with highland meadows on the reverse side.
Upon arrival at the location there was a building under construction! It turns out that the area is being worked over by illegal loggers taking out native Candeia trees to extract the oil from the wood. Candeia has a terrible wet-dog smell, but apparently the oil can be distilled into an ingredient for perfume. A truckload of Candeia is big money.
The new building is a police post meant to stop the practice. It most likely will mean that the area will be closed to humans altogether. Either that or it will become just another bribery collection point. Anyway, I was bummed. Whenever the government gets involved in anything here it goes south in a big way, especially if theres money involved. It remains to be seen what will happen out there but Im not optimistic. Mac
