After checking with this
http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/tx.txt
(6) "Illegal knife" means a:
(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches;
(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by
being thrown;
(C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto,
and poniard;
(D) sword; or
(E) spear.

im having a hard time determining if a Balisong blade is illegal

Also, would this be illegal?
http://www.coldsteel.com/tripleactions.html
I find them to be very nice looking blades, and im considering buying the tanto version.

Thankyou.

From what I can gather, a "switchblade" is definitely illegal, and although not specifically defined as such, according to case law examples, a balisong is a "switchblade" because it can be opened by centrifugal force.

There's some info/opinions regarding the CS Tripple action knife that you should probably read up on before buying. In any case, I don't think it'd be considered a balisong/switchblade unless there's some method of opening that I'm not aware of.

i asked an austin police officer if balis are illegal in tx and he came back with a resounding YES.

I have found that cops are generally no better educated about knives than Joe Citizen, unless they are knife guys. Get the written word fron the state leglislative body.

The big concern is not what the state statute says, it is what do the counties or cities say or do.
Texas has no pre emption(sp) laws and each city or county can decide what is leagal. In Potter Co. North half of city of Amarillo the county DA decided that a Kershaw Chive "was" a switch blade because of that little "bump" for the assist.
The city of San Antonio has a city ordinance banning the carry of "ANY". lock blade knife. ( you can check that out on the city web site) That was passed under the famous criminal cohert of Bill Clinton, Henry Cissnarois( sp) when he was mayor of the city. This law was passed so they would have more reason to lock up certain gang wanabees when they could not get them for anything else. So as was mentioned before if a cop has had a hard day and you have an attitude you can go to jail for a pen knife.

Crap! As a born in San Antonio Texan darn right I have an attitude AND I carry a Buck 110 on my belt every day. I work at an aircraft manufacturing plant (at the airport) as a technical illustrator/graphics support dude where I use my knife rather frequently. My wife regularly flies in and out of SA Int'l Airport. I pick her up and drop off without hassle. Perhaps if I went strolling on the Riverwalk or downtown I would not be so blessed. Who you are, where you are and the time of day likely will add to the mix whether you will get noticed.
Back in the early 80s I was asked by SAPD officers not to wear one (a 110). I worked in a retail nursery and was on my way home, downtown, waiting for a bus. The tip was busted and reground below the legal length so it passed, but they made me take it off and put it in my coat pocket (conceal it!).

It may be illegal to carry but not to own. They sell autos all the time at the gun shows with cops every where.

speaking of crap. Do you think they will ever finish the airport remodeling?
Well..... They SAY it will be ready sometime. They are also trying to work the highway interchange 2 blocks away at the same time. Big mix ups.:eek:

Thanks for the replys, Ya, i live in Denton. So i guess i need to check with the local law enforcement. You say i can buy auto knives, just not carry them? Thats kinda stupid, even if its illegal to cary a balis, i still will and just say i didnt know:rolleyes:

Even checking with local LEOs can get you bum info. When I asked my F-i-L about the knife laws, he had to go look up the Penal codes before he got back to me, and even then he gave me his interpretation of those laws. I've been told at a gun & knife shop that a certain blade they sold was illegal to carry, "because a cop told them so," even tho this was the same knife that I asked my F-i-L about. Opinions are like... bellybuttons; everybody has one, and some stink.
