Trouble opening new Sebenza

I just go a NIB micarta sebenza 21, very nice. I just can't open the thing. I have several Sebenzas, so I know how to do it, but this one is stuck unless I use two hands. I took it apart and oiled it up a little, which helped. But the problem isn't the opening itself, but just getting started. The indent (is that the right term) just feels stuck. Is there anything I can do to fix that, or does it just have to "wear in?" My thumb hurts. :)

Take your time getting to know her. Relationships take time. Maybe you've opened your heart too soon before and when it was broken you said "never again." Just ease into it and let it break in...

The detent on the last two I got(a 21) was much heavier than my older Regulars, and Classics.

What type are your other Sebenzas?

The detent on my new small was savage until it "wore in". My guess is that when new they ship with a sharp ledge on the detent hole that takes a lot of force for the ball to overcome until the edge rounds off.

First off, that was awesome. Some of them can be stiff when they're new, like ZCD said. I'm opening mine now, and can see anything that could hinder its opening... if yours does just have a strong detent though, I wish I had yours lol; I live in NYC--the stronger the better!

Is it hard to push out the lockbar to close it, also?
To me it feels like sometimes a new one will have too much bend in the lockbar. Makes it hard to open or close.

A regular and another 21, but the other 21 is damascus so maybe that has something to do with it.

Thanks for the replies, I'll just keep using it until it smooths out. I'll mondos advice and make sure on finger placement, see if that makes a difference.

I was up pretty high in a tree today cutting a kite loose, would have been nice to be able to open it one handed. :)

get rid of it now and save yourself money. jk it takes time, keep playing with it. when i bought mine i was like wtf i paid a ton of money for a knife i cant even open.

Never had an issue with Seb detent. As a matter of fact, Ive always thought they were soft. Just wait till you get a 25 with the 1/8" detent ball.

Since you have others, and you can't even open this one with one hand I would send it back for inspection. I see you're in Japan, so that may be costly though. I would give it some time and see if it breaks in, but if it doesn't I would think about sending it back for inspection.

I've had a few that are like that. What I do is hold the blade in one hand, and the handle in the other, and "work it", back and forth. I usually do it for as long as I can stand it, and then continue as necessary. Breaks it in a little faster.

I had the exact same issue with my small. I ended up sending it back to CRK. They had it back in my hands in about a week's time and paid for the shipping both ways. It has functioned perfectly ever since.

Can't beat that! OP, I'd at least call CRK and see what they recommend -- break in or send back. Reeve stands by his stuff; I'm sure they'll take care of you.

Hoping no one from CRK reads this post...I had one like that...I did more or less (more, really) than you suggest...I applied a little lateral pressure in both directions to wear the washers a little bit...it did work...where's the edit/delete button on this forum software, anyway? ;)

You've had other Sebenzas. You should be familiar with how they operate. If this one ain't right, send it back.

Good luck! :)

Did you buy it from a retailer or from a forumite who might have just claimed it was "NIB"?

Another forumite. If it's not NIB then it's pretty darn close. *shrug* By paying a lot more attention to where my fingers are I can get it to open most of the time now, still a bit stiff. My old regular I really didn't have to pay attention, guess the larger ball/indent is a significant factor.
