Trouble sharpening a Benchmade Contego

Okay, so I've been trying to sharpen up my Benchmade Contego with CPM-M4 steel, and I'm finding it tough to put an edge on it. First off, it's the first knife I've had with M4 steel, and it wasn't all that sharp out of the box. It tore through paper, rather than sliced, so I gave it a go on my Spyderco Sharpmaker and it seems that I've made it worse. Been using the grey stones, but it looks like I'm either going to have to get some diamond stones to sharpen it or send it back to Benchmade. Anyone have experience with M4 steel? And does anyone know what edge angle Benchmade uses on their knives?

Sounds like you're not sharpening all the way to the apex. It will take some time, make sure you raise a burr all the way along the length of the edge.

And does anyone know what edge angle Benchmade uses on their knives?

I would not try to match the factory angle, but rather make it more acute to improve cutting performance. M4 is a pretty awesome steel, I'd say use 15 DPS on the sharpmaker.
