I'm using the Spyderco Sharpmaker and I sharpened like 6 knives on it last night to get the hang of it, then busted out my baby. I did the tradtional 20 passes on the corner of the rough, then the flat, then the corner of the fine followed by the flat and my baby wasn't shaving sharp! I did several more on the fine stones and still wasn't able to get the edge I could on my other knives. I thought maybe it was because I did so many other knives first and the stones may have been dirty, but everything felt the same. Could this be the S30V or something? Have any of you had this same problem with your Sebbies?

i have a large regular in s30v that is honestly the easiest to sharpen knife i own. CRK recommends the sharp maker because their factory grind (19-20 deg)match very well with the sharpmakers angles (40 deg or 20 deg each side). so as long as the blade it held straight it is allready at the correct angle for sharpening.

i use the corners of my medium rods only i rarely use the flats for my sebbie. in 20 passes if the blade is heavily used or 10 if it is a touch up she is back to shaving sharp (my arms have the bald spots to prove it lol). i cut alot of rope and other misc materials so i do not use the fine rods as i like there to be a little bite to the edge.

i am going on 2 yrs with my sebbie and i absolutly love it i own several other high end blades and they do recieve some carry time but my LG seb w/dual thumbstuds never leaves my right front pocket. it just plain works.

for sharpening just be aware of how the blade it contacting the rods if you feel you are not hitting it right try coloring the edge with a sharpie and attempt to sharpen again. if the color is removed you're diong it right if not you may need to adjust accordingly.

good luck enjoy your sebbie.

Try the magic marker trick to see if you are removing metal at the edge itself. When I first got my small regular sebenza a year ago I had the same problem. It seems that the factory edge that mine got was a bit too obtuse for the sharpmaker (I think my total angle was about 50 degrees instead of 40). I ended up reprofiling the edge to the lowest angle that my lansky system allowed (way smaller than 40 degrees inclusive). Then I used the sharpmaker to put a 40 degree microbevel on it. It's been a breeze to sharpen since then.
I have since been slowly taking my V grind and honing it back to a convex edge like the original factory edge.

Hope this rambling helps.

If memory serves me correctly, all Chris Reeves have a convex edge, and all sharpening systems produce a flat V edge.

I would assume that this results in the first sharpening taking a bit of time.

So far I’ve only had to strop my Sebenza.

So wait, on the spyder co sharpmaker we are to use the 40 degree slots not the 30 degree slots and corners only on the white stones for a touch up?

Do I have that right? >Large Sebbie

AFAIK, CRK people recommended using only the flat sides of Sharpmaker rods with Sebenza S30v. I believe, that makes sense as S30v may chip on microlevel when sharpening it against rod angles as it contains a fair amount of carbides - then sharpening won't produce a shaving sharp edge.

An official answer would be nice...I was just thinking the stones may have been clogged after sharpening all my kitchen knives.
