Sharpening a spyderco super blue. On the spyderco fine ceramic, I can get hair whittling and push cutting paper.

Wanted a finer edge, so, I brought out my shapton glass ceramics in 6000 and 16,000 grit. I cannot for the life of me get an edge finer than the spyderco fine - the edge gets worse (no longer hair whittling or push cutting paper).

On the universal grit chart, the 6,000/16,000 shaptons are rated at 2.45/0.92 micron, while the spyderco fine is at 6 micron.

I've tried different pressures and stroke lengths, the shaptons are doing terrible compared to the spyderco ceramic. Any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong?

How are the shapton glass ceramics in 6000 and 16,000 grit working for you on other knives ?
Congratulations on the Super Blue by the way.

My first thought is use a guided system for best results using ultra fine stones but I do free hand as well.

Your rounding the Apex due to angle inconsistencies. Everyone has to pull out the sharpie every once an a while.

I've never had trouble setting very sharp edges on very hard Super Blue with the Glasstones. Likely the edge is being rounded. Make sure that they are truly flat before using them, as the variation in angle an out of flat stone can certainly mess with your sharpness. Was the edge off of the Spyderco truly burr free? Sometimes the Spyderco stones can leave a very small burr that is very sharp, but not a clean edge if you don't use very light pressure.

You might also try doing a microbevel at a slightly higher angle with your finishing stones. That is one way to make completely sure that you are hitting the Apex along the whole edge.
