Was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting this thing sharp. Its' my first Kershaw so i'm not familiar with the steel that's used i can get a hair popping mirror edge on all my other knives but this one i can not even get to slice paper smoothly. would appreciate any help and tips that you all might have thanks very much

I've sharpened a friend's Shallot a few times. The blade shape makes things a bit frustrating. Like you mentioned, it is difficult to achieve a great edge on this knife.

The first two times I sharpened the Shallot I used a coarse diamond stone from a Smith's sharpening kit I have and worked my way up to fine Arkansas. The results weren't great but the knife was relatively sharp and I was satisfied since it was leaps and bounds over the condition of the blade when the knife was handed to me.

The last time I sharpened the knife I used Spyderco's Sharpmaker, wondering how the blade shape would respond to the sharpening rods. The Sharpmaker only seemed to sharpen parts of the blade because of the unusual shape. After an hour or two, I managed to get a decent edge on the straighter parts of the blade and then used a whetstone to sharpen the spots the Sharpmaker couldn't reach.

using medium, fine stones and stropping it after just cant get it where i want it . thing is a pain.

if its the blade shape thats making it hard to sharpen, just use a diamond rod to sharpen. or something like that. you cant sharpen the shallot on a flat stone.

This is a good reason not to buy these type of knives in the future. Crazy blade shapes may look cool but they are nothing but problems to maintain.

Good luck

It takes less than a minute on paper wheels. The sharpmaker works too. It's not just a matter of "looking cool", recurves excel at draw cuts, don't let this discourage you from using them.
