Im having some trouble sharpening the Becker Necker, took me over an hour and its still not shaving sharp. Im using a coarse stone then fine stone and a steel. any tips?

Are you getting to the edge? Try taking a black sharpie and coloring in the edge, and then sharpening. You'll quickly see where the stone is taking off the steel.

This article is an excellent primer on sharpening in general: http://www.knifeart.com/sharfaqbyjoe.html

It's been a while since I edged my Becker Necker, but I seem to recall the blade came with a fairly obtuse edge of greater than 40 degrees included - so it will take some time for metal removal to form an edge with included angle of 30 degrees or less.

Hope this helps!

What are you doing exactly and what is the state of the edge after the coarse stone.

I noticed when I got mine that the coating was pretty thick and seemed to affect sharpening. I had to work on it for a long time, but it did take a very nice edge. Don't give up, just keep working and pay attention to the angle you are using. You can work at it a little at a time too. Once I got the edge I wanted I was very pleased with the blade. Only thing I may change is the coating. It seems to make the blade drag when I cut. I'm thinking real hard about stripping it and then maybe making some grip scales for it and a leather sheath. I really like the size and shape of the blade.

btw just how would you go about taking the coating off the blade anyhow?..........i remember somebody getting it done from send i ng it off, but i cant remember where i seen it.

Don't know if this will help, but here's a picture of a Becker Necker I reprofiled to 15 degrees per side, you'll almost certainly see that the width of the edge bevel is much wider than the way they come from the factory, especially through the belly and tip:

So echoing what others have said, you probably just haven't removed enough metal. FWIW I've taken BK11's down to 12 degs./side and even 10 degs/side, that's a lot more metal still and the bevels practically run into the main blade grind.

bkkd, I've read that Citristrip works very well for removing these blade coatings, and it's not toxic and evil like many other strippers. The coating also comes off pretty easily with emery cloth. The surface underneath the coating isn't polished, can be a bit rough, so you'll probably need to do some polishing anyway if you remove the coating.

The knife wont take an edge i used the coarse stone for about 10 min it doesnt seem like anything is changing

Take the knife and make a light cut right into the stone so it has no cutting ability. Now go back to sharpen on the coarse stone for about 2-3 minutes and see if it has any effect on the cutting ability.
