The 70 grit stone feel and cuts about as fast as a 280 grit. Oh and a little off topic but not really is im reprofiling my BM 940-2 to 17 degrees per side with a 20 degree microbevel but i got done with the show side but the clip side is taking far longer

How often do you clean your lansky stones? If they appear dirty or you haven't cleaned them in a while you might want to give that a try. Also for the more wear resistant steels like on the 940 diamond stones are the way to go (much faster).

Perhaps it's filled with filing dust and needs to be cleaned. Do you oil your stones, BeagleMaster?

i have also tried flattening/roughing the stone up on concrete and still nothing is it possible that ther is a defect with the 70 grit and an explanation of why one side is taking a lot longer

I would avoid flattening on concrete but that's just my opinion. Would it be possible to get say a medium or coarse lansky diamond stone? They normally make quick work of even the tougher steels, last time I tried to re-profile s30v on the lansky with the regular stones my arm about fell off.

One other cheaper option I have used is to buy some silicon carbide sand paper and attach that to a stone using double stick tape. Fairly cheap and seems to work pretty good, local auto parts stores normally carry it.

Can't say for sure, depends how much material you need to remove and how much pressure you use but shouldn't take long at all. Should be way faster then using the regular aluminum oxide stones.
