Trouble with SJT finish

I have a SJT and the green crinkle finish looks like it is bubbleing up. It is on
both sides of the blade. It has been resting in a Semper Paratus sheath. It
doesn't look like rust or anything just raised spots all over it. Has anyone
ever had this kind of problem I will try to post a pic later.

Just a guess but it might be rust. I've seen paint start to bubble up and when scraped off shows up as rust underneath. If it's not rust than maybe a little oil was still on the blade before coating and the finish is not sticking. I'd lean towards rust if it's been sitting in a sheath.

If it were leather, I'd say it might be acids in the leather from dyes & such... but your sheath is nylon... so...

I have heard you should never store a knife in it's sheath.

Have you asked Busse about it?

If it truely is bubbled up, might be best to scrape it off and see what's underneath.

I emailed Busse to see what they think. I will probably hear from them first of
the week. I have always stored knives in sheaths with no problems. I have
many knives sitting around and none of them show any rusting.
Strange.

I'm sure that Busse will get it taken care of most rickey-tick! :D

I've had some pretty bad luck with emails to the Busse Co.
It seems like their email filters work overtime in overdrive!

i store my user knives in their sheaths. of course i make sure there isn't any dampness in them while being stored. idaho has extremely low humidity. no problem yet.

My knives are stored in leather, kydex, nylon, and even the Busse cardboard sheaths with no problem. Even when my air-conditioning was off and the humidity was elevated there were no signs of deterioration.

I think there may be something of a myth about storing knives in sheaths. Perhaps someone here may have had some bad experiences, if so, please let us know.

I believe it has had a lot to with the climate where you are. If you are fortunate to have a lower humidity such as Skunk then as long as the sheath is dry there should be no problem. In S. Florida the moist salt air has a much worse effect. I learned and unfortunate lesson a couple of years ago with a custom made out of ATS-34 while out 4 wheeling in the glades. I thought everthing was dry, big mistake. The knife never went under as far as I knew, but it sure had surface rust when I took it out the next week. I have not has this problem at all with my FSH that functions as my trail clearing knife, but since that last time I always wipe it down after a ride.

Granted, I would certainly wipe down a blade used outdoors, but if storing in your home I think corrosion problems are probably wildly exaggerated.

I somtimes use an anti-corrosive when storing inside my home or after using outside but for the most part I think corrosion (or rust) is not a problem for knives stored in their sheaths.

My question is : has anyone experienced corrosion while stored in their sheaths inside their homes?

you can buy a dryer for your safe or use those moisture absorbing bags those are slick you just throw in the oven every once in a while
note : this is for the safe queens for users they should be cleaned and oiled periodically

We've never heard of anything like this. . . . Please send it in and we'll make it right. . .

Thanks,

Yeah, moisture or not, that's not expected behavior, at least not for a new finish. I live in south florida, and I've kept my desert Natural Outlaw E in my trucks toolbox, in the bathroom, in the garage, etc, and haven't seen anything like that. Maybe if your coating had some large scratches down to bare metal, and you left it in saltwater for a few years.... My guess is that the coating hadn't cured yet, and something oily got on top and prevented it from outgassing/drying properly.

Right on Jerry - that's why I have bought many Busse Knives knowing that they are covered by an unwritten warrantee that makes Busse buyers unconditionionally happy. Never fear that a Busse Knife will not be replaced if defective in any way. Busse rocks man, and don't forget it!

I wonder if very old scotch on a blade prior to coating could cause this unnatural phenomenon. :D Way to go Jerry.

Yeah, that final quenching in Pig's Nose just before they coated your Satin Jack may have something to do with the coating bubbling up... :D

Jerry,
You are da man! I will get this puppy in the mail today. I know from past
experiences that you will take care of me.
