Hey guys, new to the forum here although I've used this forum for general blade help for years now. I've just recently gotten into really sharpening my blades and getting a mirror polish and I'm running into some issues that I just can't find information on the web about, I was hoping you guys would be able to help me here.

So I've always been able to get a very sharp edge. I've used the Lansky angle system, sharpmaker, worksharp, and the edge pro. Always been able to get a very sharp knife with these systems. Recently, I got into leather stropping and really getting a mirror polish on my blades. Two knives I'm currently working with are my Spyderco Para 3, and a Benchmade 940-2.

Right now I've got several leather strops and use diamond lapping paste consisting of 5 micron down to .5, also tried using the leather strop on the edge pro system and get these same results.

So here's my issue:

After awhile of stropping, I tend to test my blades throughout the process, check the sharpness and look at the edge to see how close to a mirror edge I'm getting. After working my way down to the .5 micron paste on a leather strop, the edge will be looking beautiful. I decide to continue to get it looking even better, at this point, I start to notice tiny scratches on the edge when I hold it at a certain angle. I mean, it's pretty noticeable too, but only from a certain angle. I seem to have degraded that mirror polish, and when I try the phonebook paper cut test, it'll be razor sharp when held at a certain angle, but other angles it'll rub against the paper and kind of skip across it, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

I was wondering what might be causing this, and if you guys have run into this before? Sorry for the long post, I look forward to seeing what you guys have to say, thanks!

You might be over stroping slightly and there for rolling the edge. As for the scratches on the edge i have no idea.

I get my mirror polish set before going to the strop. The strop will not remove scratches that are there. Its only going to inhance the polish and clean the surface which may reveal scratches already there. Or your strop is contaminated and causing scratches.

Thanksbfor the reply guys Actually Italian revealing acratches underneath the polished surface makes a lot of sense. I usually don't get too close to a good polish before moving to the strop so that would explain where the scratches are coming from. Thanks again guys
