I have given up trying to find out what SAK steel really is, BUT is this the case for "CASE" "Tru-Sharp" steel as well?
Does someone know what steel "Tru-Sharp" is?
If not, can anyone compare/rate it against, say SAK blades, or a D2 blade etc, and give me an idea?

Thanks,

I have read on this forum that Tru-Sharp is 420 stainless. I have one knife in it, a Ridgeback hunter, and it seems to dull quickly like other 420 knives. As far as SAK's the steel (as far as I can tell) is called INOX which stands for inoxidisible (sic) in French. This means the steel will not easily rust or oxidize.

One follow mention that he e-mailed Case and they stated it was a 440 class steel. But You have to be careful, as it was mentioned by a Case rep, on another board that the Tru-Sharp steel was 420 with a mid 50's rockwell. Generally speaking, people do not like their stainless steel knives.

SAK's have used a few different steels over the years, the most recent mentioned was 440A.

Case's SS is on the "soft" side and doesn't hold an edge very well. IMHO, Case can do better....MUCH better.

That's what I thought. They make pretty knives, but not something I can actually use. I have never owned one, so I thought I'd get the scoop first.
Thanks

When I emailed Case, they claimed they used 440XC at about 58 Rockwell. Bull. Butter at 58RC would cut better than Case SS. :p In AG Russell's catalog, he claims it's 420HC at 54-57, which seems about right. Won't stain in a bucket of ink, but loses an edge at the sight of cuts. :barf: I love Case knives, but I won't buy their SS anymore. Convexing helps, as you get a little more meat behind the edge, but nothing will repair truly bad steel.

V-nox uses, last I checked, 440A at 56. It's respectable, but I think there must be more to it. 440A that soft normally won't cut near as well as a V-nox does. :D

My Vnox cuts quite well (considering), and I was hoping that the Case SS would be similar. I guess that is _NOT_ the 'case'.
