Hi all, I just bought a packet of Tru- spec nylon braided cord, 100' olive drab,US Made. But I meant to have some 550 lb test cord and can't find any indication on the package. Anyone can give a hint? Thanx in advance!

the outer sheath is pretty tight. It does not have seven inner strands but 2 roughly braided strands of different colors, gray and white. I figure now what I got bears no comparison with the 550 paracord.

i think i saw the information on paracord on Doug Ritter's site, Equipped to Survive. Great site by the way. If you haven't checked it out the url is www.equipped.org i believe.

Thank you everyone for the heads up. Can I take it as this as long as it's 7 strand paracord, it's a 550 lb test one?

Real 550 cord has a core of 7 strands that aren't twisted or braided or anything, they just lay there parallel. I haven't seen anything else with that kind of core. The breaking strength will definitely be on the label.

There's a great variety of stuff sold as "parachute cord" or "parachute-style" cord.... The worst of it has a core of unidentified recycled fibers, mixed cotton, polyester, whatever they could get cheap, and who knows how strong it is. Even the worst of it isn't useless, of course; in fact it's fine for many purposes; just don't use it where you need strength.

Thanks a lot, Cougar! Think next time I'll definitly get some with 7 strands. I saw a spool of paracord with 7 strands but no breaking
strength indicated on the label. What I got will be used on knives, so
it doesn't really matter.

Merci beaucoup! Je vais chercher quelque chose de vrais. :)

Some guys like to use real 550 cord to wrap handles with the idea that they might use it for high-strength cord in an emergency.

I mentioned the worst of the other stuff on the market ... there's also some stuff that's quite good even if it isn't exactly milspec, with strength of 400 pounds or more.

I like cordwrap handles and I use a variety of different cords and wraps. 550 cord is soft for a comfortable grip and yet it's quite grippy, especially if you wrap it in continous half hitches or in a Strider-style wrap. The only trouble is if the handle is big and your hands aren't you might find wrapping in 550 cord makes the handle too fat. Then you might try mason's cord. There are several different kinds of mason's cord in the hardware stores, some flat braided and some twisted. It only comes in white and bright fluorescent colors. I use the white and paint it black with a poster paint pen after wrapping. The paint glues it on so it'll never unravel even if your knotting skills aren't great, and it makes it waterproof -- not that water would hurt nylon cord anyway, but after you paint it it doesn't absorb water. That makes it easier to keep clean.

Magic marker does not work; it rubs off and turns your hand black. If you look in the art supplies section of a stationery store you'll see a different kind of pen that uses "pigment ink" -- ie paint. Instead of a felt tip it has a plunger.

"He thinks we're from France -- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Really I could be from France ... I look just like a Human from Earth as long as I don't take off my stocking cap....

Hi Eric..

True Spec is not real Parachute cord..
at least not what we deam parachute cord..

I got tricked into buying Tre Spec before,, and I bought a large quantity of it, in hope of resal.. We once I found out what it was I felt burned and couldn't sell it....

Now,, before I buy, I want to see the inside, and insist on a cut end..If they don't they can blow wind.. I won't get stuck with that $hit again...

If you want the real stuff,, gicve ron or Karen Hood a dingle at:

www.survival.com

They are or will be selling Real parachute cord at a decent price...
