Okay so I just a car (I’m sixteen) and I am kind of putting together some in case of emergency stuff and a fixed blade knife is something I think I should have. What knife would you suggest or what do you use if you do use one?

I keep a swamp rat ratmandu in there. Between it, and the usual 2 on me, I’m set for just about anything.

Budget is going to play a huge role in your options. Do you have a price range in mind?

Being 16 and just getting a car (congrats), I'm guessing the budget is low.

First choice is a Mora. 4" is $15 or so. You'd be surprised how tough these suckers are.

Schrade SCHF10 is $30 and has decent reviews on yt. Condor knives start about here.

$50 will get a Gerber Strongarm which I do own and love. It is my go to budget hiking/camping knife. Nice sheath for the $ too.

If you go to $70+, you are into Becker/Kabar territory.

I wouldn't pay too much for it, I have had 2 such knives stolen from my vehicles. Also, they may get used to dig out a stuck tire or clear a branch in the road.

With that in mind, I would buy something from Ontario's SP series. Something heavy enough to chop, but has a nice pointy tip as well would be preferable.

While I do recommend a dedicated knife and having one to keep in your vehicle is good I think the best thing knife related to keep in your vehicle is a multi-tool. I was recently looking over multi-tool options as I couldn't find my old Leatherman Super Tool, its been found, and personally I would say either a Leatherman Rebar or Super Tool 300. Fixed would be best if it will be kept in the vehicle I would say probably a 4-6" blade I would go for budget as it might get more abuse and is at a greater risk of being stolen. I don't have any off hand names to through out and certainly nothing that hasn't been mentioned above.

I carry a Terava Jaakaripuuko 140 in my truck. Nice stout blade. Not too expensive if you ever get broken into. If you were to go this route and get the carbon version, keep the blade oiled with mineral oil to avoid rust.

I also keep a small hatchet, shovel and multi-tool in the truck. Mostly cheaper SOG type stuff.

I keep a 14" Condor machete in my truck. I typically have a work bag that has a number of knives in it in addition to my regular carry knives. Don't usually have a regular fixed blade in my truck, but if I did, it would be the Kabar Becker BK-15.

Recommendations? I would suggest something like the Kabar Becker BK-16. The sheath is not leather and should not cause rusting issues.

Congratulations on the vehicle Luke. My first truck knife, at 16yrs, was a USMC KABAR. It rode with me on many adventures. When I was around 43, I gifted it to my nephew.
My wife bought me a RAT(Esee)RC6 for our 10th anniversary and it’s been in my truck for the last ten years.
As far as suggestions? Get what pleases you, not necessarily what pleases others.
If you’re in a hurry, grab a Mora or a Buck until you decide exactly what your looking for.
I also carry a machete for work or whatever.

Happy hunting.

Hultafors GK Heavy Duty. About eight bucks. Sturdy enough to pop open a frozen car door (except since it’s inside the vehicle it’s not much use for that).
This. Absolutely this. I've used mine as a knife/prybar/everything else for years.

Bk 15 for me. Don’t think it ended up being a popular knife, but I like it and think it’s practical for a lot of applications short of serious batoning
