After reading so many horror stories of people being left without a good fixed blade, I decided to throw some in my truck. At first it was my Cold Steel Bushman. Then it was my Benchmade Nimravus Cub. Then my short Kabar USMC. Now, I have an Ontario TAK 1, the Nim Cub in my BOB, and a Leatherman Wave. I'm going to be getting a Chris Reeve Mountaineer II down the road, and leave it in there. I actually use these sometimes, not for anything major, but I use them. Is this overkill? I live in northern MD, a couple miles east of I-83, and my stomping grounds are MD, PA, VA, WV, DE and NJ.

I believe it's better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

Ok, now that I've gotten that out of the way...I'd go with a machete, a hatchet, multi-tool, and a good fixed blade. While all of these items have sharp edges, none are necessarily duplicates of the other. If you're ever stopped by a LEO, these various tools would be plausible.

If you have more than one fixed blade in the truck you might come off like that guy in Lost.

There's a lot of room in a truck, so you're not constrained by how much (reasonably) to carry. I've got a Busman and a Schrade X-Timer folder in my BOB, along with a folding army shovel. I've also got a Ka-Bar Dozier spearpoint clipped to my sunshade and a Leatherman Wave in the console. I've also had an HI khukri in the truck, but I've had some rusting issues with it in the truck, so I took it out.
